The seven choghadiyas: ruling planet and use
Each choghadiya has a ruling planet. The periods of the Moon, Jupiter, Mercury and Venus are taken as good, and those of the Sun, Saturn and Mars as not. What tradition uses each for is below (as given by Drik Panchang).
| Choghadiya | Ruler | Used for |
|---|---|---|
| Amrit | Moon | any auspicious work |
| Shubh | Jupiter | puja, samskaras, weddings |
| Labh | Mercury | starting studies, learning a new skill |
| Char | Venus | travel |
| Udveg | Sun | not for auspicious work; taken as fine for government work |
| Kaal | Saturn | not for auspicious work; said to suit work that builds up wealth |
| Rog | Mars | not for auspicious work; said to suit disputes and contests |
How the choghadiya is worked out

In the old Indian reckoning the day from sunrise to sunset is 30 ghati (ghadi); in a 12-hour day one ghati is 24 minutes. The choghadiya divides the day into 8 equal parts, so each is about 4 ghati: hence the name, chau (four) + ghadiya. It is also called the Chaturshtika muhurat. The night (sunset to the next sunrise) is divided into 8 parts the same way.
The first choghadiya of the day belongs to the weekday’s ruling planet, and the order then runs Sun (Udveg), Venus (Char), Mercury (Labh), Moon (Amrit), Saturn (Kaal), Jupiter (Shubh), Mars (Rog). The eighth choghadiya of the day belongs to the weekday’s ruler again. The night follows a different order; the first choghadiya for each weekday is below.
| Weekday | First of the day | Vaar Vela | Kaal Vela | Kaal Ratri |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sunday | Udveg (Sun) | day 4 | day 5 | night 6 |
| Monday | Amrit (Moon) | day 7 | day 2 | night 4 |
| Tuesday | Rog (Mars) | day 2 | day 6 | night 2 |
| Wednesday | Labh (Mercury) | day 5 | day 3 | night 7 |
| Thursday | Shubh (Jupiter) | day 8 | day 7 | night 5 |
| Friday | Char (Venus) | day 3 | day 4 | night 3 |
| Saturday | Kaal (Saturn) | day 6 | day 1 and 8 | night 1 and 8 |

Choghadiya: questions and answers
When are the good choghadiyas today in Nashik?
On Wednesday, 7 October 2026 in Nashik, the good choghadiyas of the day are Labh 6:27–7:56 AM, Amrit 7:56–9:25 AM, Shubh 10:54 AM–12:23 PM, Char 3:20–4:49 PM and Labh 4:49–6:18 PM. At night: Shubh 7:49–9:20 PM, Amrit 9:20–10:52 PM, Char 10:52 PM–12:23 AM and Labh 3:25–4:56 AM (Kaal Ratri). Panchangs advise against starting auspicious work in Rahu Kaal, Vaar Vela, Kaal Vela and Kaal Ratri.
Which choghadiya is the most auspicious?
Amrit (ruled by the Moon) is taken as the best and is used for any auspicious work. Shubh (Jupiter) is taken as good for puja, samskaras and weddings, Labh (Mercury) for study and learning something new, and Char (Venus) for travel. Even a good choghadiya is left out when it falls in Rahu Kaal, Vaar Vela or Kaal Vela, panchangs advise.
How long is one choghadiya?
One day choghadiya is an eighth of the daytime (sunrise to sunset), and one night choghadiya an eighth of the night (sunset to the next sunrise). On Wednesday, 7 October 2026 in Nashik a day choghadiya lasts about 89 minutes and a night one about 91. In Delhi a day choghadiya is about 77 minutes in winter (21 December) and about 105 minutes in summer (21 June).
Is the choghadiya different in each city?
Yes. The choghadiya is counted from sunrise and sunset, which come at different times in each city. On Wednesday, 7 October 2026, for example, the first choghadiya begins at 6:27 AM in Nashik and at 6:30 AM in Mumbai. The names and their order depend on the weekday, so they are the same everywhere.
How do I read the night choghadiya?
The night choghadiya runs from sunset to the next sunrise. In the “Night choghadiya” list above, times after midnight carry the next date. A time before sunrise (4 am, say) belongs to the night of the previous date.
What are Vaar Vela, Kaal Vela and Kaal Ratri?
For each weekday one day choghadiya is called Vaar Vela and one Kaal Vela, and one night choghadiya Kaal Ratri (on Saturday there are two each of Kaal Vela and Kaal Ratri). Panchangs hold that auspicious work begun in them does not bring the hoped-for result, so a good choghadiya that falls in one is left out too. The lists above mark them.
How is Rahu Kaal different from the choghadiya?
Both divide the time from sunrise to sunset into eight equal parts. The choghadiya names each part (Amrit, Shubh, Labh …), while Rahu Kaal is one fixed part for each weekday (the second on Monday and the seventh on Tuesday, for example). So Rahu Kaal always coincides with one day choghadiya. Drik Panchang advises leaving out a good choghadiya that does.
