The Sanatan tree

580 names, 749 relations, one tree. Every relation with its source.

In short

The Sanatan tree puts gods and goddesses, avatars, the people of the Ramayana and the Mahabharata, rishis, scriptures, sampradayas, tirthas and festivals in one tree: "Sanatan Dharma" at the centre, ten branches from it, and in each branch the lineages (father to son and daughter). It now holds 580 names and 749 relations. Tap a name: it opens and shows all its relations (guru, friend, avatar, divine father) with their sources.

Frequently asked questions

Where do the relations in this tree come from?

Every relation comes from a text: the Ramayana’s from the Valmiki Ramayana (with kanda and sarga where checked), the Mahabharata’s from the Mahabharata, Harivamsha and Bhagavata, the gods’ from the Puranas. A relation held only by one tradition or by folk belief says so. Tap a name to see the source of each relation.

Why do Rama and Krishna appear twice?

Rama is in the Ramayana branch as Dasharatha’s son and Krishna in the Mahabharata and Yadava branch as Vasudeva’s son. Under Vishnu in the avatars branch there is a pointer (↗) to each; tapping it takes you to them.
