In the Ashtavinayak yatra

The Ashtavinayak are eight Ganesha temples in Maharashtra. According to Maharashtra Tourism the yatra begins and ends at Morgaon: Morgaon, Siddhatek, Pali, Mahad, Theur, Lenyadri, Ozar, Ranjangaon and back to Morgaon. Theur is the fifth stop. Tradition holds all eight images to be swayambhu, found in natural form rather than carved (Maharashtra Tourism leaflet).

The stories (by tradition)

The temple trust tells three stories from the Puranas, without naming a Purana. First: Brahma’s restless mind became steady here, so the place was called "Sthavar Kshetra", which became Theur. Second: Gana, son of Abhijit and Gunavati, seized the sage Kapila’s Chintamani gem; Vinayaka killed Gana and returned the gem, but Kapila would not take it, and Ganesha stayed here under a kadamba tree as "Chintamani". Third: Indra was freed here from the sage Gautama’s curse by a six-syllable mantra.

The temple and the Peshwas

According to the temple trust and the Poona gazetteer (1885), the temple was built for 40,000 rupees by Chintamani Maharaj Deo, the second Dev of Chinchwad; about a hundred years later the Peshwa Madhavrao I added the assembly hall and Haripant Phadke put in the wooden pillars. According to the gazetteer Madhavrao died here on the morning of 18 November 1772; according to the trust the memorial of his wife Ramabai, who became sati, is also here.

According to the trust the image faces east with its trunk to the left, while the main entrance faces north; the temple bell was taken by Chimaji Appa from the Portuguese at Vasai, and the river Mula-Mutha surrounds the temple on three sides.
