Ujjayini is one of the 51 Shakti Peethas of the Pithanirnaya; by the text Sati’s elbow fell here, and the goddess is Mangalachandi and the Bhairava Kapilambara. Bharatchandra’s Bengali Annadamangal takes it as Ujani (Kogram) in the Burdwan area, while the Ujjayini of the older lists is Ujjain in Madhya Pradesh (the historian D. C. Sircar).

The Harsiddhi temple at Ujjain
The official website of the Shri Mahakaleshwar temple (Ujjain) calls the Harsiddhi temple, between Mahakal and Ramghat, the 13th of the 51 Shakti Peethas of Sati, says the goddess was the deity of King Vikramaditya and gives her ancient name as Mangalchandika. In the Pithanirnaya too Ujjayini is the 13th pitha and its goddess Mangalachandi.
We found the Mangalchandi temple of Ujani (Kogram) of the Bengali tradition on no government page. Because there are two claims, no map is given here.
Where the sources differ
- The Devi Bhagavata (7.30) names the goddess at Mahakala (Ujjain) Maheshvari.
- The Mahakaleshwar temple website names no limb for Harsiddhi; the elbow comes from the Pithanirnaya.
- The count of pithas depends on the text: the Pithanirnaya lists 51, some Bengali lists 52, the Devi Bhagavata (7.30) gives 108 places with names of the goddess, and the early Tantras name only four (Sircar).
