Shraddh tithi calculator

In short

By tradition, the shraddh in Pitru Paksha follows the tithi of death: the Hindu tithi running at the moment of death, not the calendar date. Enter the date and time of death below: the page works out the tithi running at that moment and tells you on which day of 2026 that tithi’s shraddh falls. A tithi counts the same whether it fell in Shukla or Krishna paksha; a death on Purnima or Amavasya is remembered on Sarva Pitru Amavasya (10 October).

Find the tithi from the date of death

Choose the date and press “Show the tithi”. Leave the time empty if you do not know it.

A tithi comes from the angle between the Sun and the Moon, so the tithi at a given moment is the same across India; the city is used only for sunrise when the time is not known. If the death happened outside India, convert the time to Indian time first. Our tithi times can differ from Drik Panchang by about 2 minutes. Your information never leaves this page. How we calculate

The rule: the tithi, not the date

In Hindu tradition the annual shraddh is performed every year on the Hindu tithi of death. According to Drik Panchang this is the tithi that was running at the moment of death. In Pitru Paksha (the Krishna paksha of Ashwin), that ancestor’s Mahalaya shraddh falls on the day of the same tithi. A Saptami of Shukla paksha and one of Krishna paksha are both remembered on the day of Saptami Shraddha.

Some families and regions fix the tithi by their own custom (for example, the tithi at sunrise that day). In that case, follow your family’s custom and your purohit’s advice.

Frequently asked questions

On what basis is the shraddh tithi in Pitru Paksha usually fixed?

By tradition, on the tithi of death: the shraddh falls on the day of Pitru Paksha with the same Hindu (lunar) tithi that was running at the moment of death. It is not fixed by the birth date, rashi or birth nakshatra, nor by the calendar date. Drik Panchang’s Shraddha Tithi Calculator also takes the tithi at the time of death. For your family’s own custom, ask your purohit.

How do I find the shraddh tithi for Pitru Paksha?

The shraddh tithi is the Hindu tithi that was running at the time of death. If you know the date and time, enter them in the calculator above; the shraddh is done on that tithi’s day in Pitru Paksha.

If the death was in Shukla paksha, when is the shraddh?

In Pitru Paksha the paksha does not matter: a Panchami in either Shukla or Krishna paksha is remembered on the day of Panchami Shraddha. Drik Panchang states this for every tithi.

What if the time of death is not known?

Enter only the date. If the tithi changed that day, the page shows both tithis and the time of the change; ask your family or purohit which applies. If the tithi cannot be known at all, the tradition is to perform the shraddh on Sarva Pitru Amavasya (10 October).

If the death was on Chaturdashi, when is the shraddh?

According to Drik Panchang, citing the Nirnaya Sindhu, Chaturdashi Shraddha (Ghaat Chaturdashi, 9 October) is only for those who died from a cause such as an accident, weapon, poison, fire or water. For a natural death the shraddh is on Sarva Pitru Amavasya.

Is my information sent anywhere?

No. The calculation runs in your browser; the date, time and city never leave this page.
