Moonrise: questions and answers
What time will the moon rise in Dhanbad today?
On Wednesday, 7 October 2026 the moon rises in Dhanbad at 2:19 AM. Moonset is at 3:16 PM. At moonrise the tithi is Krishna Dwadashi, and about 16% of the moon is lit.
What time will the moon rise on Sankashti Chaturthi and Karva Chauth?
The next Sankashti Chaturthi (Vakratunda Sankashti Chaturthi, Karva Chauth) is on Thursday, 29 October 2026; the moon rises in Dhanbad that day at 7:52 PM. The later ones are in the list above, and every date is in the Sankashti Chaturthi list.
Why does the moon rise later every day?
As it orbits the Earth, the moon moves about 12–13° east in the sky each day, so it rises on average about 50 minutes later than the day before. The gap is not the same all year: by our calculation it ranges from about 27 to 74 minutes in Delhi. The next 30 days are in the table below.
Why is there no moonrise on some dates?
Since the moon rises later each day, about once a month its rise crosses midnight into the next date, and that date has no moonrise (in the same way one date a month has no moonset). On such a day this page shows the next moonrise.
Is moonrise different in each city?
Yes. On Wednesday, 7 October 2026 the moon rises at 2:19 AM in Dhanbad and at 3:20 AM in Mumbai. It rises earlier in eastern cities and later in western ones, and the north–south distance adds a few minutes too.
Why can’t I see the moon at the time given?
Moonrise is when the moon rises over an open, flat horizon. With buildings, trees, hills, haze or clouds in the way it shows a few minutes, or much, later. On a fast day with clouds, many families offer arghya towards the moon once the moonrise time has passed; follow your family’s custom.
How accurate are these times?
They are calculated astronomically for Dhanbad (23.80° N, 86.43° E), in Indian Standard Time. Checked against Drik Panchang, moonrise and moonset agree within a minute.
