What Karva Chauth means
"Karva" is the spouted pot of clay or metal used to offer arghya to the moon, and "Chauth" is the Chaturthi tithi; this is why one of its names is Karak Chaturthi. This vrat comes not from any Purana but from folk tradition and vrat kathas, so its rituals vary a little by region and family.
Why moonrise differs from city to city
The moon rises earlier in eastern cities and later in western ones; moonrise in Kolkata and in Mumbai can differ by more than an hour. The time given above is calculated for when the centre of the moon is on the horizon. If there are clouds, tall buildings or hills, the moon becomes visible a few minutes later.

How homes and regions differ
- Sargi is eaten before sunrise and is traditionally given by the mother-in-law. It begins the fast; it is not counted among the puja items.
- What goes in the karva differs by home: many fill it with wheat, the lid with boora and dakshina on top; Drik Panchang’s vidhi has the karva filled with water or milk and coins and given away (karva daan). The arghya is offered with water.
- A printed picture of Gauri and a Gauri shaped from yellow clay are both common. Lists of the solah shringar also differ on which items they count.

Checked against these sources and written in our own words; only items named by at least two of them are listed: Drik Panchang: Karwa Chauth Puja Vidhi; Drik Panchang: Karwa Chauth; Webdunia: Karwa Chauth puja samagri; Amar Ujala: Karwa Chauth samagri (2025); Times Now Hindi: Karwa Chauth puja samagri (2025); Bharatkosh: Karva Chauth; Aaj Tak: the Karva Chauth thali (2017)
How to perform the puja

Fasting through the day
Traditionally without water; if you are pregnant, unwell or taking medication, decide according to your health.
- Step 3
Evening puja
During the puja muhurat, worship Shiva and Parvati, Ganesha and Kartikeya; keep the karva filled with water and listen to the Karva Chauth katha.
- Step 4
Moon darshan and arghya
When the moon rises, look at it through the sieve and offer arghya from the karva.
- Step 5
Breaking the fast
Traditionally, the fast is broken by drinking water from the husband’s hand.
The story of Veeravati
According to the popular vrat katha, Veeravati was the only sister of seven brothers. On Karva Chauth, seeing their sister suffering from hunger and thirst, the brothers lit a lamp behind a tree and showed her a false moon through a sieve. Veeravati broke her fast, and misfortune struck her husband. The next year she kept the fast with all its proper rites, and then her husband was restored to her. The story is told in many versions.
