All times are Indian Standard Time, for New Delhi. Differences of 1–2 minutes between panchangs are normal. How we calculate
How the Purnima date is fixed
- The Purnima day is the one with the Purnima tithi at sunrise; if two sunrises have it, the first, and if none does, the day within which the tithi begins and ends. Drik Panchang names this day “<month> Purnima”.
- The fast: according to Drik Panchang the Purnima fast is kept a day early, on Chaturdashi, only when Purnima begins before the end of that day’s Madhyahna (the third of the day’s five parts); if Chaturdashi lasts beyond Madhyahna, the fast is on the Purnima day itself, even if Purnima runs that evening. In this period that happens three times.
We computed every date from October 2026 to December 2027 with our panchang engine and compared it with Drik Panchang’s New Delhi list; all 15 dates agree (3 in 2026, 12 in 2027). Our tithi start and end times run 1–2 minutes after Drik Panchang’s. We do not publish a date or time that does not match.
Frequently asked questions
When is Purnima from October 2026 to December 2027?
In 2026: 26 October, 24 November, 23 December. In 2027: 22 January, 20 February, 22 March, 20 April, 20 May, 18 June, 18 July, 17 August, 15 September, 15 October, 14 November, 13 December.
Is the Purnima fast kept on Purnima or a day before?
Drik Panchang’s rule is that when the Purnima tithi begins before the end of Madhyahna on the previous day, the fast is kept on that previous day (Chaturdashi); otherwise on the Purnima day. In this list that is so for Ashwina Purnima (26 October, fast 25 October), Shravana Purnima (17 August, fast 16 August), Kartika Purnima (14 November, fast 13 November). For every other Purnima the fast and the Purnima fall on the same day.
How many Purnimas are there in a year?
Usually 12, one in each lunar month. A year with an Adhik (extra) month has 13; 2026 has 13 because of Adhik Jyeshtha (Drik Panchang’s 2026 list). 2027 has 12.
What is done on Purnima?
According to Drik Panchang the Purnima fast (Pournami Vratam in South India) is kept from sunrise until the Moon is seen, and many homes hold the Shri Satyanarayan puja on this day. Settle the bath, charity and puja with your family’s custom or your purohit.
Is Purnima on the same day in every city?
This list is from New Delhi’s sunrise, sunset and moonrise. The moment a tithi changes is the same across India, but sunrise, sunset and moonrise change with the city, so now and then the vrat can fall a day apart in another city. Check your city’s panchang or ask your purohit.
