What Rahu Kaal is and how it is counted
Rahu Kaal (Rahu Kalam) is a stretch of about an hour and a half in the day in which, by tradition, no new auspicious work is begun. It is named after Rahu, one of the nine grahas. The count is simple: the time from sunrise to sunset (the daytime) is divided into eight equal parts, and one fixed part for each weekday is Rahu Kaal.
Rahu Kaal is the second part on Monday, the third on Saturday, the fourth on Friday, the fifth on Wednesday, the sixth on Thursday, the seventh on Tuesday and the eighth (last) on Sunday; the first part after sunrise is never Rahu Kaal. Drik Panchang gives this order. Yamaganda and Gulika Kaal are likewise fixed parts for each weekday, in the table below.
For example, New Delhi on Monday, 21 June 2027. Sunrise is at 5:24 AM and sunset at 7:22 PM, a daytime of 13 hr 58 min. An eighth of that is about 104.8 minutes. On Monday Rahu Kaal is the second part, so it begins one part after sunrise: from 7:09 AM to 8:53 AM. Drik Panchang gives 7:09 to 8:53 AM that day too.
Rahu Kaal, Yamaganda and Gulika Kaal by weekday
| Weekday | Rahu Kaal | Yamaganda | Gulika Kaal |
|---|---|---|---|
| Monday | second part 7:30–9:00 AM | fourth part 10:30 AM–12:00 PM | sixth part 1:30–3:00 PM |
| Tuesday | seventh part 3:00–4:30 PM | third part 9:00–10:30 AM | fifth part 12:00–1:30 PM |
| Wednesday | fifth part 12:00–1:30 PM | second part 7:30–9:00 AM | fourth part 10:30 AM–12:00 PM |
| Thursday | sixth part 1:30–3:00 PM | first part 6:00–7:30 AM | third part 9:00–10:30 AM |
| Friday | fourth part 10:30 AM–12:00 PM | seventh part 3:00–4:30 PM | second part 7:30–9:00 AM |
| Saturday | third part 9:00–10:30 AM | sixth part 1:30–3:00 PM | first part 6:00–7:30 AM |
| Sunday | eighth part 4:30–6:00 PM | fifth part 12:00–1:30 PM | seventh part 3:00–4:30 PM |
Part = one of the eight equal parts of the daytime, counted from sunrise. The small times are for a day with sunrise at exactly 6 AM and sunset at exactly 6 PM; the “7:30 to 9:00 on Monday” often quoted comes from this. The real time changes every day and in every city, so see your city’s time above.
Rahu Kaal, Yamaganda and Gulika Kaal in tradition
By tradition no new auspicious work is begun in Rahu Kaal, such as wedding rites, an engagement, a griha pravesh or a new business. Work already begun carries on through Rahu Kaal; the rule is about beginnings only. Drik Panchang notes that Rahu Kaal is especially observed in South India. For the muhurat of a particular undertaking, it is good to ask your own purohit.
Yamaganda and Gulika Kaal are also one fixed part of the daytime for each weekday. Drik Panchang lists Rahu Kaal, Yamaganda and Gulika Kaal together under “Inauspicious Timings” in its daily panchang, and this page gives today’s time for all three.
Rahu Kaal and the choghadiya both divide the daytime into eight equal parts, so Rahu Kaal always coincides with one day choghadiya; the choghadiya page marks it. Choghadiya today: Mathura
