All times are Indian Standard Time and the same all over India. Differences of 1–2 minutes between panchangs are normal. How we calculate

What panchak is

According to Drik Panchang, panchak is the yoga formed as the Moon passes through Kumbha and Meena rashi with the Dhanishtha, Shatabhisha, Purva Bhadrapada, Uttara Bhadrapada and Revati nakshatras; it is named for these five (pancha) nakshatras.

Panchak begins when the Moon’s sidereal position (Lahiri ayanamsha) reaches 300°, the start of Kumbha (Aquarius) rashi and of the third pada of Dhanishtha, and ends at 360°, the end of Revati and of Meena (Pisces) rashi. In between the Moon passes through five nakshatras: the second half of Dhanishtha, Shatabhisha, Purva Bhadrapada, Uttara Bhadrapada and Revati.

The Moon goes once round the nakshatras in about 27.3 days, so panchak comes about once a month and lasts some four and a half to five days (108 to 118 hours in this list). April 2027, May 2027 and June 2027 each touch two panchaks, one running in from the month before or on into the month after.

Panchak begins and ends with the Moon’s position alone, not with sunrise, so the moment is the same all over India: Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata or Chennai all have the same time (Indian Standard Time). Outside India, convert it to your local time.

Panchak in tradition

Drik Panchang says that the five days of panchak are avoided for auspicious work, and its day panchang lists panchak with inauspicious times such as Rahu Kaal and Bhadra. By tradition certain tasks are also avoided during panchak, but the list differs from source to source; we have not yet checked it in a text ourselves, so it is not given here. Ask your purohit for the muhurat of any task.

Drik Panchang’s panchak list gives the panchaks no separate names. In its day panchang the names Mrityu, Agni, Raja, Chora and Roga panchaka appear under “Panchaka Rahita Muhurta”: short spans that change with the rising lagna every day, a different calculation from this panchak of the Moon in Kumbha and Meena. Some sources also name a panchak by the weekday it begins on; we have not checked that rule in a text, so no names by weekday are given. The weekday each panchak begins on is in the list.

How we checked the times

We computed the start and end of every panchak with our panchang engine and compared them with Drik Panchang’s New Delhi panchak lists for 2026 and 2027. The dates of all 16 panchaks from October 2026 to December 2027 agree, and every time is within 2 minutes of Drik Panchang’s (ours run about a minute later). We do not publish a date or time that does not match.
