The Kartik Nahan at Garh Ganga (Garhmukteshwar) 2026

In everyday speech the Kartik Purnima bath in the Ganga is also called "Nahan" or "Ganga Nahan". At Garhmukteshwar and nearby Brijghat in Hapur district, a big fair for the Ganga bath is held every year on Kartik Purnima, and lakhs of pilgrims bathe (Hapur district administration; Amar Ujala).

The main bath is on Tuesday, 24 November 2026: Purnima tithi runs from 11:43 PM on 23 November to 8:24 PM on 24 November. At Garhmukteshwar that day the Brahma muhurat is 5:00–5:54 AM and sunrise is at 6:47 AM (our calculation, checked against Drik Panchang). The fair’s dates and arrangements are announced by the administration each year; check the Hapur district administration’s notice before you travel.

The tradition of the bath

The Uttara Khanda of the Padma Purana speaks of the special merit of the early-morning bath in the months of Kartik and Magh. In Kartik many people bathe before sunrise all month, and the practice ends on Kartik Purnima. In Magh the Magh Mela is held at the Sangam in Prayagraj, where Kalpavasis live on the bank from Pausha Purnima to Magha Purnima and bathe daily; Makar Sankranti, Mauni Amavasya, Vasant Panchami, Magha Purnima and Maha Shivratri are taken as its main baths.

A popular mantra said while bathing is “Gange cha Yamune chaiva Godavari Sarasvati, Narmade Sindhu Kaveri jale’smin sannidhim kuru” (O Ganga, Yamuna, Godavari, Sarasvati, Narmada, Sindhu and Kaveri, be present in this water). After the bath it is the custom to offer water to the Sun and to give in charity as one can.
