Shattila Ekadashi falls in the dark half of Magha (Purnimanta). Its name comes from six uses of sesame (tila): by the Padma Purana, on this day one bathes with sesame, rubs on a sesame paste, offers sesame in the fire, drinks water with sesame, gives sesame and eats sesame, and the text calls these six destroyers of sin.

- Parana is on the next day, during Dwadashi, after Hari Vasara (the first quarter of Dwadashi); the morning is preferred.
- In illness, pregnancy or while on medicine, choose the form of the fast according to your health.

The brahmin woman who never gave food
As the Padma Purana tells it, a brahmin woman kept many vows and fasts, but never gave alms or food to anyone who begged. When the Lord himself came begging in the guise of a mendicant, she angrily dropped a lump of clay into his bowl. By the merit of her fasts she reached heaven, but found there a fine house with no grain in it. After hearing the rite of Shattila Ekadashi from the wives of the gods she kept this fast, and her house filled with wealth and grain.
