Amalaki Ekadashi falls in the bright half of Phalguna, a few days before Holi. On this day Lord Vishnu is worshipped at an amla (amalaki, Indian gooseberry) tree with a night vigil; the Padma Purana calls the amla the tree dear to Vishnu, and its rite includes the worship of Parashurama.

How the amla tree arose, and the hunter’s tale
In the Padma Purana the sage Vasishtha tells King Mandhata that the amla tree arose from a drop that fell from the mouth of the Supreme Self, and that the gods dwell in its root, trunk, branches, leaves, flowers and fruit. A popular tale is also told on this day, of a hunter who spent a night hungry watching the Amalaki Ekadashi vigil in the city of Vaidisha and was reborn as King Vasuratha; that tale is not in the Padma Purana.
