In short

“Om Jai Ekadashi Mata” is an aarti that honours the Ekadashi tithi as a goddess. It names all 26 Ekadashis of the year, with their month and fortnight, from Utpanna in Margashirsha to Padmini in the extra month. It is sung on every Ekadashi after the worship of Vishnu and the vrat katha, often together with “Om Jai Jagdish Hare”.

The common text is given here; it is almost the same across many sources. Some versions read ‘Varuthini’ for ‘Baruthini’, and ‘paap haranhari’ for ‘aap haranhari’ in verse 12. In verse 11 many printed copies spell ‘Ashwin’ as ‘Ashchin’, a printing error. The month names follow the purnimanta calendar of North India. The last verse carries the name ‘jan Gurdita’, but there is no firm information about the author. When sung, the first verse (the refrain) is repeated after every verse.

After the aarti, most homes recite: कर्पूरगौरं करुणावतारं संसारसारं भुजगेन्द्रहारम्।

Frequently asked questions

How many Ekadashis are named in this aarti?

26: the 24 Ekadashis of the year, and the two Ekadashis of the extra month (Adhik or Purushottam Maas), Parama and Padmini.

When is this aarti sung?

On every Ekadashi, after the worship of Vishnu and the vrat katha of that Ekadashi. In many homes “Om Jai Jagdish Hare” is sung along with it.

Which calendar do the month names follow?

The purnimanta calendar of North India, in which a month ends on the full moon. In the amanta calendar (used for example in Gujarat, Maharashtra and South India) an Ekadashi of the dark half falls in the previous month; Utpanna, for instance, is called Kartik Krishna Ekadashi there. The months of the bright-half Ekadashis are the same in both.

Why does the aarti begin with Utpanna Ekadashi?

By tradition the Goddess Ekadashi came into being on Margashirsha Krishna Ekadashi, which is why it is called Utpanna (‘born’). The aarti too begins its count here, saying ‘Utpanna, Vishvatarani janmi’.

Who wrote this aarti?

The last verse carries the name ‘jan Gurdita’. No reliable information about him is available.
