The story

The story of Malyavan and Pushpavati

As the Padma Purana tells it, the Gandharvas Malyavan and Pushpavati, singing in Indra’s court, were so taken with each other that they lost tune and rhythm. Indra in anger cursed them to become pishachas. Wandering in the cold of the Himalaya, on Magha Shukla Ekadashi they ate nothing out of misery and stayed awake all night. The next morning they were freed from the curse and returned to heaven in their old forms.
