How the Odia calendar is counted
Odia months carry the names of the lunar months (Baisakha, Jyeshtha …), but they are counted by the Sun: a new month begins on the day of the Sankranti, also when the Sankranti falls in the evening or at night. A Sankranti right at midnight can move it to the next day: Karkata Sankranti was at 11:46 PM on 16 July 2026, and Shrabana began on 17 July. Mesha Sankranti, Maha Bishuba Pana Sankranti, is the Odia New Year.
Drik Panchang’s Odia Panji counts the year in the Vilayati era, which changes with Ashwina (Kanya Sankranti): it is 1434 from 17 September 2026. Odisha’s panjikas also use other counts, such as the Amli era and the Anka year; they are not given here.
The months here run to August 2027: the months from Ashwina 2027 on will be added once they are checked against Drik Panchang.
