How the Bengali calendar is counted
The Bengali month is solar: a new month begins the day after the Sankranti (the day is counted from midnight). So Mesha Sankranti falls on 14 April 2027 and Pohela Boishakh, the New Year, on 15 April. When the Sankranti falls after midnight, as Tula Sankranti does at 2:13 AM on 18 October 2027, the month begins on 19 October.
The year begins with Boishakh: from 15 April 2026 it is Bangabda 1433, and from 15 April 2027, 1434. After Pohela Boishakh the Bengali year is the CE year − 593.
This is the traditional panjika calendar of West Bengal (Drik Panchang’s Bengali Panjika, on the Bisuddha Siddhanta). The revised calendar of Bangladesh keeps fixed month lengths, so its dates can be a day apart.
