How the fast and parana are kept
- The fast begins at sunrise on Ekadashi, with worship of Lord Vishnu, tulsi leaves and a lamp.
- By tradition, rice and grains are not eaten; without water or with fruit, according to custom and health.
- Parana is on the next day, during Dwadashi, after Hari Vasara (the first quarter of Dwadashi); the morning is preferred.
- In illness, pregnancy or while on medicine, choose the form of the fast according to your health.
What the name means
The name, from “papa” (sin) and “ankusha” (the goad that steers an elephant), says the fast is held to curb and destroy sins. By tradition, as with each Ekadashi, its worth was told by Shri Krishna to Yudhishthira.
