How the fast and parana are kept
- The fast begins at sunrise on Ekadashi, with worship of Lord Vishnu, tulsi leaves and a lamp.
- By tradition, rice and grains are not eaten; without water or with fruit, according to custom and health.
- Parana is on the next day, during Dwadashi, after Hari Vasara (the first quarter of Dwadashi); the morning is preferred.
- In illness, pregnancy or while on medicine, choose the form of the fast according to your health.
How Ekadashi came to be
By tradition, while Lord Vishnu lay in yogic sleep, a demon named Mura came to attack him. A goddess arose from Vishnu’s body and slew Mura. Pleased, Vishnu named her “Ekadashi”.
