In short

The Shani Chalisa is a hymn to Shani Dev whose first chaupai is “Jayati jayati Shanidev dayala”. It has two opening dohas, forty chaupais and a closing doha. It gives ten names of Shani, recalls the stories of Ram, Vikramaditya, Harishchandra and Nala, and repeats a folk belief about Shani’s vehicles. Chaupai 40 names the poet, Ram Sundar. By tradition it is recited especially on Saturdays.

Chaupais 27 to 35 give the results said to follow from Shani’s seven vehicles and four “feet” (gold, iron, silver and copper). These lines reflect a folk astrological belief. They are given here as the chalisa’s own words so that the traditional text is complete; SanatanBodh does not endorse them and makes no prediction from them. The text was compared word by word with three printed booklets (Randhir Prakashan’s ‘51 Chalisa Sangrah’, Amit Pocket Books’ ‘Shani Chalisa Aarti Sahit’, Jalandhar, and a Nath Pustak Bhandar booklet, Delhi) and five websites. The main variant readings: in chaupai 5 ‘pal mein’; in chaupai 14 ‘vir ka’ and ‘vir ko’; in chaupai 15 ‘jab’ in place of ‘tuhi’; in chaupai 17 ‘telahin’; in chaupai 18 ‘hai’ in place of ‘hvai’; in chaupai 19 ‘Harishchandrahun’; in chaupai 27 ‘hay diggaj’ (horse, elephant) in place of ‘jag diggaj’; in chaupai 35 ‘mangal kari’; in chaupai 37 ‘nashi bal’ and ‘nasi-nasi’. In the last doha the printed book and several websites read ‘ki hon Bhakt taiyar’, while some sources read ‘kinhon Vimal taiyar’; in the printed books the ‘Vimal’ doha closes a different Shani Chalisa (‘Shanidev main sumiraun tohi’). The Nath Pustak Bhandar text (2006) has different chaupais on nine vehicles in place of chaupais 27 to 35, and different closing dohas. No Gita Press edition was found.

Frequently asked questions

Who wrote the Shani Chalisa?

Chaupai 40 names the poet Ram Sundar (‘kahat Ram Sundar Prabhu dasa’), and tradition regards it as his work. A booklet of Nath Pustak Bhandar, Delhi (2006) says at the end that it was written by Ramsundar Das of the Durvasa ashram at Prayag; no more is known. The ‘Bhakt’ of the last doha seems to be the poet’s pen name.

When is the Shani Chalisa recited?

It can be read on any day. By tradition it is recited especially on Saturdays and on Shani Jayanti. Chaupai 39 of the Chalisa mentions offering water to the peepal tree and giving lamps on Saturdays.

How should the verses on vehicles and “feet” be read?

Chaupais 27 to 35 give different results for Shani’s seven vehicles and four metal “feet”, and the Chalisa itself says that astrology proclaims these results. This is a folk belief. SanatanBodh gives these lines as part of the full traditional text and makes no prediction for anyone from them.

Which stories does the Chalisa mention?

Ram’s exile, the abduction of Sita, Lakshman struck by the Shakti weapon and the burning of Lanka; the folk story of King Vikramaditya and the nine-lakh necklace; Harishchandra and Nala; Shiva and Sati; Ganesha’s head (the Brahmavaivarta Purana, Ganapati Khanda, tells how Shani’s glance severed it); and the Pandavas. The Chalisa links all these hardships to Shani’s influence; older texts often give another cause, as when the Mahabharata (Vana Parva) says it was Kali who troubled Nala.

Is there more than one Shani Chalisa?

Yes. Printed books also carry other Shani chalisas, beginning ‘Shanidev main sumiraun tohi’, ‘Shanidev kripalu Ravi-nandan’ and ‘Jai Shri Shani Dev Maharaja’. This page gives the one most widely read: ‘Jayati jayati Shanidev dayala’.
