In short

The Hanuman Chalisa is a hymn in praise of Hanuman in the Awadhi language. Tradition attributes it to Goswami Tulsidas, the poet of the Ramcharitmanas. It has two opening dohas, forty chaupais and a closing doha. Devotees recite it daily at home and in temples, and especially on Tuesdays, Saturdays and Hanuman Jayanti.

This is the common standard text. Printed editions differ slightly in the spelling of a few words, such as ‘baranaun/baranoon’, ‘buddhi/budhi’, ‘samharo/sanharo’ and ‘rachchhak/rakshak’. Some editions read chaupai 6 as ‘Sankar svayam’ instead of ‘Sankar suvan’. The first doha is also the first doha of the Ayodhya Kand in Tulsidas’s Ramcharitmanas.
