  1. Verse 1

    जय गणेश, जय गणेश, जय गणेश देवा। माता जाकी पार्वती, पिता महादेवा॥

You have a single tusk, you are full of compassion, and you have four arms. Vermilion shines on your forehead, and you ride a mouse.

The aarti says that you give sight to the blind, a sound body to those with leprosy, a child to the childless and wealth to the poor.

    ‘सूर’ श्याम शरण आए, सफल कीजे सेवा। माता जाकी पार्वती, पिता महादेवा॥

‘Sur’ Shyam has come to your shelter; O son of Parvati and Mahadev, make this service fruitful.

In short

“Jai Ganesh Jai Ganesh Deva” is the most widely sung Hindi aarti of Lord Ganesh. In simple words it names his parents and describes his single tusk, four arms, mouse mount and the offering of laddus. It is sung at Ganesh Chaturthi and Ganeshotsav, at the Lakshmi-Ganesh Puja on Diwali, and in daily worship.

Some versions differ slightly, for example ‘paan chadhe phool chadhe’ or ‘haar chadhe phool chadhe’, ‘mathe par tilak sohe’ and ‘andhe ko aankh det’. Many popular versions add one more verse: ‘Deenan ki laaj rakho, Shambhu sutkari. Kamna ko poorn karo, jaaun balihari.’ When sung, the first two lines (the refrain) are repeated after every verse. Because the last verse carries the name ‘Sur’, some link the aarti to Surdas, but its authorship is not firmly established.

After the aarti, most homes recite: कर्पूरगौरं करुणावतारं संसारसारं भुजगेन्द्रहारम्।
