In short

“Jai Ambe Gauri” is one of the most widely sung aartis of Goddess Durga (Ambe Maa). It describes the Goddess’s form, her adornments and her lion mount, and recalls her victories over the demons told in the Durga Saptashati. It is sung during Navratri, Durga Puja, Mata ki Chowki and jagrans, and at the end of daily worship of the Goddess.

The wording varies slightly by region and tradition, for example ‘nishidin/nishdin’, ‘Bhairon/Bhairun’, and in verse 11 ‘khadg khappar dhari’ in place of ‘var mudra dhari’. When sung, the first line (the refrain) is repeated after every verse. The last verse carries the name ‘Shivanand Swami’, but there is no firm historical information about the author.

After the aarti, most homes recite: कर्पूरगौरं करुणावतारं संसारसारं भुजगेन्द्रहारम्।
