In the Bhaum (Mangal) Pradosh katha as tradition tells it, an old woman keeps a fast for Hanuman every Tuesday and on that day neither plasters the floor nor digs the earth. Hanuman tests her in the guise of a sadhu and has a fire lit on the back of her son Mangaliya to cook his meal. When she calls him after the meal, Mangaliya comes running, alive and laughing, and Hanuman shows himself in his true form.

Pradosh Vrat 2026-27: full listA Pradosh vrat whose Trayodashi falls on a Tuesday is called Bhaum Pradosh or Mangal Pradosh (Drik Panchang). In the booklets Suta calls it the vrat for freedom from illness and tells the story of the old woman who kept it. The story is about Hanuman; the Pradosh puja is still a Shiva puja.
This katha is told by tradition; we found no Purana chapter for it. In the printed Pradosh booklets, Suta tells the kathas of all seven weekdays to Shaunaka and the other sages. We checked this one event by event against Drik Panchang and two printed booklets and told it in our own words; any differences are given below.
How the vrat and katha are kept
- By Drik Panchang and the booklets: in this vrat one eats once in the day, a meal of wheat and jaggery.
- Red flowers are offered in the puja and the one keeping the vrat wears red.
- The main time of the Shiva puja is Pradosh kaal after sunset, while the Trayodashi tithi also runs (Drik Panchang); the puja time of the next dates is above. The full rite is on the Pradosh vrat katha page.

The Bhaum Pradosh katha: the old woman, Mangaliya and the sadhu
Long, long ago an old woman lived in a town. She had a son named Mangaliya. She had deep faith in Hanuman. Every Tuesday she kept a fast for Hanuman and made him an offering with due rite, and on Tuesdays she neither plastered the floor nor dug the earth.
When many days had passed this way, Hanuman decided to test her faith. He came to her door in the guise of a sadhu and called out, "Is there a devotee of Hanuman here who will grant my wish?" The old woman came out and asked what he wished. The sadhu said he was hungry and would cook a meal; she should plaster a little patch of ground for him. The woman was torn, and with folded hands said she would do anything he asked except plaster the floor or dig the earth.
The sadhu tested her three times, then said, "Call your son. I will lay him face down, light a fire on his back and cook my meal." The ground slipped from under the old woman’s feet, but she had given her word. She called Mangaliya and handed him to the sadhu. The sadhu had her lay Mangaliya down with her own hands and light the fire on his back. Heavy-hearted, she went inside the house.
When the meal was ready the sadhu called the old woman and told her to call Mangaliya too, so that he could also eat. Her eyes filled with tears; she begged him not to wound her heart further by speaking his name. The sadhu would not relent, so she called Mangaliya. At once Mangaliya came running in, laughing. Seeing her son alive, the old woman fell at the sadhu’s feet. Then the sadhu showed himself in his true form. Seeing Hanuman in her own courtyard, she felt her life had found its fulfilment. By the booklet, this vrat brought her liberation.
After the katha
After the katha the Shiva aarti is done; the Pradosh booklets give "Jai Shiv Omkara" for it. The full rite of the Pradosh vrat and the original katha of the Skanda Purana are on the Pradosh vrat katha page.

What is Bhaum Pradosh?
A Pradosh vrat whose Trayodashi falls on a Tuesday is called Bhaum Pradosh (Drik Panchang). The vrat is kept on the day whose Pradosh kaal after sunset has the Trayodashi, so it sometimes falls on the Dwadashi day. The next dates and the puja time are at the top of this page; by the Pradosh booklets, this is the katha read and heard that day.
