In short

The Ganga Chalisa is a hymn to Mother Ganga that begins “Jai jai jai jag pavani”. It tells of Bhagiratha’s austerities, of the Ganga being held in Shiva’s matted hair and of her descent to earth, and remembers Haridwar, Prayag and Kashi. By tradition it is recited on Ganga Dussehra, Ganga Saptami, Kartik Purnima and on days of bathing in the Ganga.

This is the text of the printed ‘51 Chalisa Sangrah’ of Randhir Prakashan, Haridwar; Webdunia’s 2021 page has almost the same text. Drik Panchang, Bhakti Bharat and other Webdunia pages carry a garbled copy of this Chalisa (for example ‘harana’, ‘dalini’, ‘Jahanu’), which seems to have been written back from Roman script; it was used only to confirm the words. The main variants: in chaupai 3 the printed book and Webdunia print ‘jai jai jai Hanu suta’, while the other sources have ‘Jahnu suta’ (daughter of Jahnu, Jahnavi), which is taken here; in chaupai 7 the book prints ‘taral tarang tang’, but the opening doha says ‘tung tarang’, so ‘tung’ is taken; in chaupai 15 Webdunia reads ‘lahrai’; in chaupai 17 some sources read ‘puni Bhagirathi’ for ‘muni Bhagirath’; in chaupai 35 the book prints ‘adhin’ and Drik Panchang ‘aghin’ (sinners), which is taken here. In chaupai 4 every source reads ‘mam tanu’; the meaning takes it as a description of the Goddess’s form. In the last doha the poet gives the year of composition in code words; since their meaning is not certain, no year is given here.

Frequently asked questions

Who wrote the Ganga Chalisa?

Chaupai 39 says ‘Sundardas Ganga kar dasa’ and names the village of Kakra and the sage Durvasa. The same signature appears in the Navgrah Chalisa and the Sheetala Chalisa, where the poet says he lives east of Prayag. Beyond this, no reliable information about the poet is available.

When is the Ganga Chalisa recited?

It can be read on any day. By tradition it is recited especially on Ganga Dussehra, Ganga Saptami, Kartik Purnima, Makar Sankranti and on other occasions for bathing in the Ganga.

Which story of the Ganga’s descent does the Chalisa tell?

Bhagiratha’s austerities to free the sixty thousand sons of King Sagara, the Ganga being held in Shiva’s matted hair, and her coming down to earth. The story is told in the Valmiki Ramayana (Bala Kanda) and the Bhagavata Purana (ninth book). According to the Chalisa the Ganga has three streams: Mandakini in the sky, Jahnavi on earth and Prabhavati in the netherworld.

Why is the Ganga called Jahnavi and the mother of Bhishma?

In the story in the Valmiki Ramayana (Bala Kanda), on her way down the Ganga flooded the sacrificial ground of the sage Jahnu; he drank her up and then released her, so she is called Jahnu’s daughter, ‘Jahnavi’. According to the Adi Parva of the Mahabharata, the Ganga was King Shantanu’s wife and the mother of Bhishma.
