Meaning, sources and more prayers: sanatanbodh.in/en/prayers/ram-108-naam/

In short

The Shri Rama Ashtottara Shatanamavali gives 108 names of Lord Rama, each said as “Om … Namah”. They follow the order of the Shri Rama Ashtottara Shatanama Stotram (“Shriramo Ramabhadrashcha…”); the colophon in the Gita Press edition places it in the Uttara Khanda of the Padma Purana. By custom a tulsi leaf, flower or akshat is offered at each name. It is commonly recited on Ram Navami and Vivah Panchami.

This is the Shri Rama Ashtottara Shatanamavali. Its names come from the Shri Rama Ashtottara Shatanama Stotram that begins “Shriramo Ramabhadrashcha Ramachandrashcha Shashvatah”. Other lists of 108 names of Rama are also printed, such as the stotram of the Rama Rahasya, which begins “Ramo Ravanasamharakritamanushavigrahah”; that is a different list. The sources checked differ here: name 43 reads “Dandakaranyavartanaya” in some; name 44 “Ahalyashapavimochanaya”; name 49 “Jitamitraya” (short i); name 65 “Mahodaraya” (short a); names 69–70 read “Anadaye, Adipurushaya” in Gita Press; name 84 “Jitavarishaya” (same meaning); name 93 “Yajvane”; name 95 “Vibhishanapratishthatre” (who installed Vibhishana as king) in some; names 98, 100 and 101 “Parabrahmane, Paranjyotishe, Parandhamne” in some (same meaning); name 108 “Paraya” in Gita Press. One common reading of the stotram has “Shatrujichchhatrutapanah” in place of name 15 and “Dandakaranyapavanah” in place of name 43. “Jitamitraya” comes twice, at 11 and 49, in most sources, so it is repeated here too.

Frequently asked questions

How many names are in the Shri Rama Ashtottara Shatanamavali, and where does it come from?

It has 108 names of Shri Rama. They are the names of the Shri Rama Ashtottara Shatanama Stotram (“Shriramo Ramabhadrashcha…”). In the Gita Press book Shatanama Stotra Sangraha, the colophons of both the stotram and the namavali place them in the Uttara Khanda of the Padma Purana.

What is the difference between the namavali and the stotram?

The stotram strings the same names into verses, such as “Shriramo Ramabhadrashcha Ramachandrashcha Shashvatah”. The namavali says each name on its own with “Om … Namah”, so that an offering can be made at every name.

How and when is an archana done with this namavali?

By custom, a tulsi leaf, a flower or akshat is offered to Shri Rama at each name during worship. It is commonly recited on Ram Navami and Vivah Panchami, and in many homes as part of daily worship.

Why do some names differ from book to book?

Printed books and websites give different readings for a few names, such as “Jitavarashaye” or “Jitavarishaya” at name 84; both mean the one who conquered the ocean. Here each name follows the reading found in most of the sources checked, and the other readings are given in the note.
