In short

The Santoshi Mata Chalisa is a hymn to Mother Santoshi that opens with the doha ‘Shri Ganapati pad nay sir’. It describes her form, the offering of jaggery and chickpeas, the Friday vrat and its closing worship (udyapan). By tradition it is recited on Fridays, especially on the day of the Santoshi Mata vrat, together with the vrat katha and the aarti. Its author is not known.

This is the Chalisa that begins ‘Shri Ganapati pad nay sir’, as printed in Randhir Prakashan’s ‘51 Chalisa Sangrah’ (Haridwar, 2004, pages 236 to 239); Drik Panchang has the same text. Another Santoshi Mata Chalisa, beginning ‘Bandaun Santoshi charan Riddhi-Siddhi datar’, is also widely sung; it is a different composition and is not given here. Variant readings: one web text (Hindunidhi) reads ‘sang’ for ‘dhing’ in chaupais 11 and 12, ‘yukt’ for ‘yut’ in chaupai 35 and ‘badha’ for ‘byadha’ in chaupai 40. ‘Kahlavaham’ in chaupai 2 and ‘vyakulyari’ in chaupai 25 appear in this form in every source checked, so they are kept. Where the printed book has ‘brat’, ‘sampati’ and ‘aru’ with a long u, this page writes ‘vrat’, ‘sampatti’ and ‘aru’, as the book itself does elsewhere. The Chalisa carries no poet’s name.
