Meaning, sources and more prayers: sanatanbodh.in/en/prayers/durga-108-naam/

In short

These are 108 names of Durga, each said as “Om … namah”. The list comes from the Durga Ashtottara Shatanama Stotram that Gita Press prints in its Durga Saptashati, where Shiva tells Parvati the names; its colophon places it in the Vishvasara Tantra. By custom, kumkum, a red flower or akshat is offered at each name, and it is recited in Navratri, on Durga Ashtami, Tuesdays and Fridays.

This is the namavali form of the Shri Durga Ashtottara Shatanama Stotram (“sati sadhvi bhavaprita bhavani bhavamochani…”) printed in Gita Press’s Durga Saptashati; according to the colophon of the stotram it comes from the Vishvasara Tantra. The names and their count follow the numbering in the Gita Press Hindi translation: the words “cha”, “tatha” and “sada” in the verses are not names, and “bhavyabhavya”, “aparnanekavarna” and “vimalotkarshini” each hold two names. “Ananta” comes twice, at 25 and 103, as it does in the verses. Names 15 and 16 are formed from “mahatapah” and “manah” in the verse, giving “mahatapase” and “manase”; one online namavali has “mahatapayai” and “manarupayai” here. The Brihat Tantrasara gives the same stotram with some different readings, such as Chandraghanta at 14, Satya at 23, Kulasundari at 47 and Vakprada at 65. Other lists of 108 names of Durga are printed too: one found more often in South Indian collections begins “Om Durgayai namah, Om Shivayai namah, Om Mahalakshmyai namah, Om Mahagauryai namah, Om Chandikayai namah”, and another begins “Om Shriyai namah, Om Umayai namah, Om Bharatyai namah”.

Frequently asked questions

Which text do these 108 names of Durga come from?

They come from the Shri Durga Ashtottara Shatanama Stotram, which Gita Press prints in its Durga Saptashati. In the stotram Shiva tells Parvati these names, and according to its colophon (“iti shri-vishvasara-tantre …”) it is part of the Vishvasara Tantra.

What is the difference between the namavali and the stotram?

The stotram sets the same 108 names in verse, with opening verses and verses on the fruit of reciting it. In the namavali each name is said on its own with “Om … namah”, so that something can be offered at each name.

How is an archana done with the namavali?

By custom, a pinch of kumkum, a red flower or a few grains of akshat is offered to the Goddess as each name is said. One verse of the stotram says to worship a young girl (kumari), meditate on the Goddess and then recite the 108 names.

Why do other books give different 108 names of Durga?

There are several different lists of 108 names of Durga; the list that begins “Om Durgayai namah, Om Shivayai namah …” is a separate namavali. Copies of this same stotram also differ in some words, as in the version in the Brihat Tantrasara.

When is it recited?

By custom it is recited most during Navratri, on Durga Ashtami and on Tuesdays and Fridays. The closing verses of the stotram praise its daily recitation; that is the text’s own statement.
