In short

The Vaishno Devi Chalisa is a hymn to Mother Vaishno Devi of Mount Trikuta that begins “Namo namo Vaishno vardani”. It tells the story kept by the shrine’s tradition: the Mother’s austerities, her escape from Bhairon into the cave, Banganga, Charan Paduka and her form as the pindis. By tradition it is recited in Chaitra and Sharad Navratri and on the pilgrimage.

This is the text of two printed books, the ‘51 Chalisa Sangrah’ of Randhir Prakashan, Haridwar, and Omkarnath Shastri’s ‘Vijayeshvar Nitya Niyam Vidhi’, compared also with Drik Panchang. The three agree almost completely. Small differences: Randhir and Drik Panchang print ‘namoh namoh’; the doha has ‘Trikuta/Trikoota’; in chaupai 10 Drik Panchang reads ‘pujat aven’; in chaupai 25 Vijayeshvar reads ‘Adi Kunwari’; in chaupai 34 Vijayeshvar reads ‘seva kar var’; in the closing doha Randhir prints ‘dharm ko hani’. ‘Karengi shoshan’ in chaupai 8 and ‘barvan’ in chaupai 32 read the same in every source; their sense is unclear, so the meaning does not fill them in by guesswork. The story the Chalisa tells, of the Mother’s birth, Bhairon, Shridhar, Banganga, Charan Paduka, the cave and Bhairon Ghati, follows the tradition of the Vaishno Devi shrine.

Frequently asked questions

Who wrote the Vaishno Devi Chalisa?

The last chaupai says ‘Sevak Sharma sharan tihari’, which is the poet’s signature. No reliable information about the poet’s full name or time is available.

When is the Vaishno Devi Chalisa recited?

It can be read on any day. By tradition it is recited especially in Chaitra and Sharad (Ashvin) Navratri; chaupai 39 also names these two Navratris. Pilgrims on the way to the shrine read it too.

Which story of Vaishno Devi does the Chalisa tell?

By tradition: the Mother’s birth in the house of Ratnakar, her austerities to win Ram, Ram’s promise to take her as his own as Kalki in the Kali age, her escape from Bhairon in the form of a young girl to Mount Trikuta, Banganga, Charan Paduka, her nine months in the cave, and Bhairon’s death, forgiveness and boon. This is the tradition of the Vaishno Devi shrine.

What does ‘pindi form’ mean?

In the cave of Vaishno Devi there is no carved image of the Goddess but natural rock forms (pindis), which tradition holds to be Mahakali, Mahalakshmi and Mahasaraswati. Chaupais 2 and 31 speak of this pindi form.
