In short

The Kali Chalisa is a hymn to Goddess Kali that opens with the doha ‘Jai Kali kalimal haran’. It describes the weapons in her eight hands, the slaying of Mahishasura and of Shumbha and Nishumbha, and her protection of devotees. By tradition it is recited especially during Navratri and at Kali Puja on the new-moon night of Diwali. Its author is not known.

This is the Chalisa that begins ‘Jai Kali kalimal haran’, as printed in the Manoj Publications booklet ‘Kali Chalisa’ (pages 5 to 11); the Bhakti Bharat text agrees with it word for word. The differences are only of spelling, such as ‘chaunsath/chausath’ and ‘karun/karoon’; Bhakti Bharat reads ‘yuti’ for ‘yut’ in chaupai 40. The booklet prints ‘dehoo’ in the doha; this page writes ‘dehu’. A second, longer Kali Chalisa, beginning ‘Jai Kali Jagadamb jai, harani ogh agh punj’, is also found (Randhir Prakashan’s ‘51 Chalisa Sangrah’, Drik Panchang); it is a different composition with 54 chaupais, and its closing doha carries the name ‘Bhakt’. The episodes in chaupais 23, 27 and 28 (the destruction of Ravana’s army in the Treta age, Shiva coming to her feet as a child, and her tongue coming out) are given as the Chalisa tells them; no scriptural reference for them was checked. The Chalisa carries no poet’s name.

Frequently asked questions

How many chaupais are there in the Kali Chalisa?

This Chalisa has an opening doha, 40 chaupais and a closing doha.

Is there more than one Kali Chalisa?

Yes. This page gives the one beginning ‘Jai Kali kalimal haran’. A longer Kali Chalisa beginning ‘Jai Kali Jagadamb jai’ is also printed, and a composition beginning ‘Jai Kali kankal malini’ is known as the Mahakali Chalisa. The three are different texts.

When is the Kali Chalisa recited?

It can be read on any day. By tradition it is recited especially during Navratri and at Kali Puja. According to Drik Panchang, in West Bengal, Odisha and Assam Kali Puja (Shyama Puja) is performed on the new-moon day of Diwali, at midnight of the Amavasya.

What is Kali’s episode in the Durga Saptashati?

In chapter 7 of the Durga Saptashati, Kali springs from the forehead of the angry Ambika and slays Chanda and Munda, and so is named Chamunda. The slaying of Mahishasura and of Shumbha and Nishumbha, which the Chalisa also mentions, is told in the Durga Saptashati as well.
