  1. Verse 1

Durge durghat bhari tujvin sansari. Anathnathe ambe karuna vistari. Vari vari janma marnante vari. Hari padlo aata sankat nivari ||

O Durga, without you this world is very hard to get through. O protector of the helpless, O Mother, spread your compassion. Ward off, ward off the round of birth and death. I am beaten now; take away my trouble.

  2. Refrain (dhrupad)

Jay devi jay devi mahishasuramthini. Survar eeshvar varde tarak sanjivni ||

Victory, victory to you, O Goddess, crusher of Mahishasura. You grant boons even to the foremost gods and to Ishvara; you carry us across, and you give new life (sanjivani).

  3. Verse 2

Tribhuvan bhuvni pahta tuj aisi nahi. Chari shramle parantu na bolve kahi. Sahi vivad karita padle pravahi. Te too bhaktanlagi pavsi lavlahi ||

Search the three worlds and there is none like you. The four (usually understood as the four Vedas) grew weary, yet could say nothing of you. The six (usually understood as the six schools of philosophy) argued until they were swept away by the current. And you, beyond them all, come quickly to your devotees.

  4. Verse 3

Prasannavadne prasanna hosi nijdasa. Kleshampasuni sodvi todi bhavpasha. Ambe tujvachoon kon purvil aasha. Narahri tallin jhala padpankajlesha ||

O you of the gracious face, you are pleased with your own servants. Free us from suffering and cut the noose of worldly bondage. O Mother, who but you will fulfil our hopes? Narahari is lost in even a speck of your lotus feet.

In short

“Durge Durghat Bhari Tujvin Sansari” is one of the best-known Marathi aartis of Goddess Durga. Its refrain is “Jai Devi Jai Devi Mahishasuramathini”. In Maharashtra it is sung by tradition during the days of Navratri and at the end of the worship of the Goddess. In it the devotee says that this world is hard to cross without the Goddess, and asks her for compassion and protection.

This aarti is in Marathi, and its original Marathi text is given here. The five sources agree line for line; a few words vary: in the refrain ‘Mahishasuramardini’ instead of ‘Mahishasuramathini’ (same meaning), and in some ‘Jai Devi Jai Devi jai Mahishasur…’; in verse 2 ‘tujvin bhuvani pahata tuj aise nahi’, ‘na bolave’ and ‘padilo pravahi’; in verse 3 ‘hoti nijdasa’ and ‘sodi todi’; in verse 1 ‘sankat nevari’. Sources do not agree on the author: according to Marathi Wikipedia the aarti came to Samarth Ramdas during his darshan of Bhavani Mata at Tuljapur, while the Marathi aarti collection on sanskritdocuments.org gives it to Sant Narahari Sonar. The name ‘Narahari’ appears in the last line of the aarti. In Maharashtra the refrain ‘Jai Devi Jai Devi’ is sung after every verse; here it is given once, after the first verse.

After the aarti, most homes recite: कर्पूरगौरं करुणावतारं संसारसारं भुजगेन्द्रहारम्।
