In short

The Annapurna Chalisa is a hymn to Annapurna, the Goddess who gives food and reigns over Kashi, and opens with the doha ‘Vishveshvar-padapadma ki raj’. It tells how Sati gave up her body, was born again as Girija, performed severe penance and, with a boon from Brahma, won Shiva once more. By tradition it is recited especially on Annapurna Jayanti, observed on Margashirsha Purnima. Its author is not known.

This text is taken from the Nath Pustak Bhandar, Delhi booklet ‘Annapurna Chalisa evam Stotra’ (2004, pages 3 to 17) and compared word by word with Randhir Prakashan’s ‘51 Chalisa Sangrah’ (pages 241 to 244). The two books give the same text; the Randhir Prakashan printing has several misprints, such as ‘padidevata’, ‘igya yagya’ (for Daksha yagya) and ‘stri-kalatra pani’, and Drik Panchang repeats the same misprints. Variant readings (Randhir Prakashan): ‘anand’ in chaupai 1, ‘jate’ in 8, ‘gay’ in 11, ‘tav’ in 14, ‘uthayehu’ in 18, ‘sancho’ in 20, ‘sadapurne … anant apurne’ in 30, ‘kripa sagri’ in 31, ‘vilasit bale’ in 32 and ‘navahinge’ in the closing doha. Both books print ‘kinh’ and ‘kinhi’ as ‘kihn’ and ‘kihni’. In chaupai 28, ‘tab’ stands for ‘tav’ (your). The opening chaupais echo the first line of the Annapurna Stotram, which tradition attributes to Adi Shankaracharya, ‘Nityanandakari varabhayakari saundaryaratnakari’, where the Goddess is likewise called ‘Kashipuradhishvari’. The Chalisa carries no poet’s name.

Frequently asked questions

How many chaupais are there in the Annapurna Chalisa?

It has an opening doha, 40 chaupais and a closing doha.

When is the Annapurna Chalisa recited?

It can be read on any day. By tradition it is recited especially on Annapurna Jayanti. According to Drik Panchang, Annapurna Jayanti is observed on the Purnima of the month of Margashirsha, and the Goddess’s main temple is in Varanasi.

What story does the Chalisa tell?

Chaupais 6 to 27 tell it: Sati gives up her body in the fire of yoga at Daksha’s sacrifice, is born as Girija in the home of the Himalaya, Narada tests her resolve, she performs severe penance, Brahma grants her a boon, and Girija wins Shiva once more. In this way the Chalisa sees Annapurna as a form of Parvati.

How is this Chalisa related to the Annapurna Stotram?

They are separate compositions. The Sanskrit Annapurna Stotram is attributed by tradition to Adi Shankaracharya and begins ‘Nityanandakari varabhayakari’. The opening chaupais of the Chalisa (lasting joy, boons and fearlessness, ocean of beauty, sovereign of Kashi, Maheshvari) echo the words of that stotram.
