Meaning, sources and more prayers: sanatanbodh.in/en/prayers/lakshmi-108-naam/

In short

These are 108 names of Goddess Lakshmi, each said as “Om … namah”. This is the common list that begins “Om Prakrityai namah”, drawn from the names of the Lakshmi Ashtottara Shatanama Stotram (“Prakritim vikritim vidyam…”). By custom, kumkum, akshat or a flower (a lotus where available) is offered at each name during archana, and it is recited on Fridays, at the Diwali Lakshmi puja and on Sharad Purnima.

This is the “Shri Lakshmi Ashtottara Shatanamavali”. Its verse form is the Lakshmi Ashtottara Shatanama Stotram that begins “Prakritim vikritim vidyam…”, in which Ishvara (Shiva) tells the names when the Goddess asks. Other lists of Lakshmi’s names are printed under the same title, such as the one beginning “Brahmaja, Brahmasukhada, Brahmanya…” and the one beginning “Shuddhalakshmi, Buddhilakshmi, Varalakshmi…”; the Ashtalakshmi namavalis are separate again. Main differences between the sources: name 29 is “Kshirodasambhava” (born of the Ocean of Milk) in some sources. Name 30 is “Anugrahaprada” (giver of grace) in several popular lists, while most texts of the stotram and one printed namavali read “Anugrahapada”. Several texts of the stotram have “Sada saumya” for name 87 and “Sarvopadravaharini” for name 103. Drik Panchang’s namavali has “Dipa” at 23 and “Satya” at 68, and one printed stotram has “Kshama” instead of “Kamakshi” at 28. “Dipta” (23, 36) and “Devi” (50, 102) come twice in the stotram itself. All the namavalis count the stotram’s “mangalam devim” as one name (96); that is how the count reaches 108.

Frequently asked questions

How many names are in the Lakshmi Ashtottara Shatanamavali, and where do they come from?

It has 108 names. They are taken from the verses of the Lakshmi Ashtottara Shatanama Stotram (“Prakritim vikritim vidyam…”), in which Ishvara (Shiva) tells the names when the Goddess asks. None of the colophons we read names a Purana or Tantra.

How is an archana done with the namavali?

By custom, each name is said with “Om … namah” and a pinch of kumkum, a few grains of akshat or a flower (a lotus where available) is offered to the Goddess. In this way there are 108 offerings for the 108 names.

What is the difference between the namavali and the stotram?

The stotram sets the same names in verse, with an opening dialogue, a meditation verse and closing verses on the fruit of reciting it. In the namavali each name is said on its own with “Om … namah”, so that something can be offered at each name.

When is it recited?

By custom it is recited on Fridays, at the Diwali Lakshmi puja and on Sharad Purnima. The closing verses of the stotram also speak of reciting it on Bhriguvara (Friday) for a year; that is the text’s own statement.

Why do some names differ from book to book?

Printed and online copies of this stotram differ in some words, for example “Krodhasambhava” and “Kshirodasambhava” at name 29. This page gives the reading found in most of the sources checked; the main differences are listed in the note above.
