Meaning, sources and more prayers: sanatanbodh.in/en/prayers/santoshi-mata-aarti/
“Jai Santoshi Mata” is the most widely sung aarti of Santoshi Mata. It describes the Goddess’s golden garments, adornments and throne, and mentions the offering of jaggery and chickpeas, Friday as her day and listening to the vrat katha. It is sung on Fridays, especially during the sixteen-Friday vrat and at its udyapan, after the puja and the katha.
This is the text found in several common sources. Another widespread version differs in a few words, for example ‘sevak jan ki’, ‘chhabi’, ‘chanvar dure’, ‘madhu, meva, bhoj dhare nyare’, ‘vinay karen ham sevak’, ‘ichchhit phal deejai’, ‘dukhi daridri rogi’, ‘dhyan dhare jo tera, vanchhit phal payo’, ‘charan gahe ki lajja, rakhiyo Jagdambe’ and ‘ji bhar ke pave’. Some texts also read ‘tribhuvan man mohe’, and ‘jo koi nar gave’ in the last verse. The aarti does not carry any poet’s name. When sung, the first line (the refrain) is repeated after every verse.
After the aarti, most homes recite: कर्पूरगौरं करुणावतारं संसारसारं भुजगेन्द्रहारम्।

Frequently asked questions
When is the Santoshi Mata aarti sung?
On Fridays after the worship of Santoshi Mata and the vrat katha, especially during the sixteen-Friday vrat and at its udyapan.
Why does the aarti mention jaggery and chickpeas?
In the Santoshi Mata vrat, jaggery and roasted chickpeas (gur-chana) are the customary offering. The aarti says that these are dearest to the Mother and that she came to be called ‘Santoshi’ because she found contentment in them.
Is Santoshi Mata mentioned in the Puranas?
Her story is not found in the Puranas. Her worship spread in North India in the 20th century through the Friday vrat, small vrat katha pamphlets and pictures, and became popular across the country after the 1975 film ‘Jai Santoshi Maa’. Regarding her as Ganesh’s daughter is folk tradition popularised by that film; the vrat katha does not make this link.
Is this the aarti from the film ‘Jai Santoshi Maa’?
No. The film’s famous song ‘Main to aarti utaaroon re Santoshi Mata ki’ is a separate composition, written by Kavi Pradeep and sung by Usha Mangeshkar. ‘Jai Santoshi Mata’ is the aarti sung in worship; its author is not known.
