Meaning, sources and more prayers: sanatanbodh.in/en/prayers/ganesh-108-naam/

In short

These are 108 names of Lord Ganesha, each taken with “Om … namah”. The list is known as the Shri Vinayaka or Vighneshvara Ashtottara Shatanamavali, and its names follow the order of the Vighneshvara Ashtottara Shatanama Stotram, which begins “Vinayako Vighnarajo…”. By custom, durva grass, a flower or akshat is offered at each name during archana. It is commonly recited on Ganesh Chaturthi, Wednesdays and Sankashti Chaturthi.

This list comes from the Shri Vighneshvara Ashtottara Shatanama Stotram, which begins “Vinayako Vighnarajo Gauriputro Ganeshvarah…”, and is called the Shri Vinayaka or Vighneshvara Ashtottara Shatanamavali. The closing verses of the stotram say that Shankara praised his son with these 108 names as he set out to slay Tripura. According to the colophon of the Brihat Stotra Ratnakara printed at Madras (1927 and 1953 editions), the stotram belongs to the Bhavishyottara Purana; the other sources checked name no Purana. A different list is also printed as “Shri Ganesha Ashtottara Shatanamavali” (for example on Drik Panchang); it begins Gajanana, Ganadhyaksha, Vighnaraja, Vinayaka, Dvaimatura, Dvimukha…. Some sites give yet another text under the name “Vinayaka Ashtottara Shatanamavali”: its first twelve names are nearly the same, but the thirteenth is “Vanipradayaka”, and later come names such as Chintamanidvipapati and Paramatma. Variants: in the stotram and namavali on sanskritdocuments.org, names 13–14 (Vanipradaya, Avyayaya) are one name, “Vanibalapradaya”, and name 101 is split into two, “Svalavanyasudhasaraya” and “Jitamanmathavigrahaya”; this page follows the 1927 print and most sources. The namavali there also splits names 38 and 81 in two and adds “Vidvatpriyaya”, so it has 111 names. Name 11: some sources read “Agnigarvachchhide”. Name 54: one source reads “Vidvatpriyaya”. Name 87: sanskritdocuments.org reads “Nagarajayajnopavitakaya”. Name 91: the sanskritdocuments.org namavali reads “Paraya”. Name 104: some lists read “Mushikavahanaya” (same meaning). Avyayaya (6, 14), Dvijapriyaya (10, 54) and Shantaya (25, 75) occur twice in the stotram itself, so they are repeated here too.

Frequently asked questions

How many names does this namavali have, and where does it come from?

It has 108 names of Ganesha, taken in the same order from the Vighneshvara Ashtottara Shatanama Stotram, which begins “Vinayako Vighnarajo…”. The stotram closes by saying that Shankara praised his son with these names as he set out to slay Tripura; the colophon in the Brihat Stotra Ratnakara printed at Madras assigns it to the Bhavishyottara Purana.

How is an archana done with the namavali?

By custom, each name is said as “Om … namah” while a blade of durva grass, a flower or a few grains of akshat are offered to Ganesha. The last verse of the stotram also speaks of worship with durva, bilva leaves, flowers, sandal paste and akshat.

What is the difference between the namavali and the stotram?

The stotram is in verse, with the names running on one after another. The namavali takes the same names in the same order, each on its own with “Om … namah”, so that something can be offered at every name.

Why do books and websites give different names?

There are several different lists of 108 names of Ganesha, such as the one that begins Gajanana, Ganadhyaksha…. This list also has a few variant readings (for example Vanibalapradaya for Vanipradaya); the note on this page gives them by name number.

When is it recited?

By custom it is recited on Ganesh Chaturthi, on Wednesdays and on Sankashti Chaturthi.
