In short

The Gorakhnath Chalisa is a hymn to Guru Gorakhnath (Gorakshanath), the Nath yogi. It has an opening doha, forty chaupais and three closing dohas. The text calls him ‘Shiv Gorakh’ and an incarnation of Shankar, and remembers him as the yogi Alakh Niranjan, with ash, matted hair and earrings. The Gorakhnath Temple in Gorakhpur gives the same text on its website as ‘Shri Goraksh Chalisa’. Its author is unknown.

This is the text of Randhir Prakashan, Haridwar, ‘51 Chalisa Sangrah’ (2004, pp. 95 to 99), checked against Drik Panchang and the website of the Gorakhnath Temple, Gorakhpur. The book spells the word both ‘avinasi’ and ‘avinashi’; here it is ‘avinashi’ throughout. In chaupai 17 the book reads ‘haro paap Har sharan tumhari’; Drik Panchang and the Gorakhnath Temple text read ‘ham sharan’ (we are in your refuge), which is taken here. In closing doha 2 the book prints ‘agar agochar’, a misprint; the other sources read ‘agam agochar’. The Gorakhnath Temple text (‘Shri Goraksh Chalisa’) differs in several places: the name is mostly ‘Goraksh’; the doha has ‘Girija’, ‘simrun’ and ‘adhar’; chaupai 1 ‘jai jai jai Gorakh avinashi’; chaupai 4 ‘janm janm ke dukh nashave’; chaupai 7 ‘mahima tumhri Ved bakhani’ (the Vedas proclaim your glory); chaupai 11 ‘mangal kare’; chaupai 25 ‘tumhro deha’ and ‘johahin neha’; chaupai 31 ‘Gopichand Bhartrihari’; chaupai 32 ‘sun lijo guru’. The temple text also orders the ending differently: ‘barah path padhe nitya joi’ comes first, followed by ‘aur shraddha se rot chadhave, haath jodkar dhyan lagave’, with ‘rot’ (a thick sweet bread offered to the deity) in place of ‘bhent’ (offering).

Frequently asked questions

How many chaupais are there in the Gorakhnath Chalisa?

There is one doha at the start, then 40 chaupais and three dohas at the end. The printed book, Drik Panchang and the Gorakhnath Temple text all have forty chaupais, though the temple text orders the last two differently.

Does the Chalisa call Gorakhnath a form of Shiva?

Yes. It says ‘Shankar roop dhar damru baje’ (chaupai 14), ‘Shiv Gorakh hai naam tumhara’ (chaupai 29) and ‘Shankar roop avatar tumhara’ (chaupai 31). The second closing doha also calls him an incarnation of the supreme Brahman.

Who are Gopichand and Bharthari in chaupai 31?

In the folk tales of North India, Bharthari was a king of Ujjain and Gopichand a king of Bengal. According to these tales both gave up their thrones to follow the Nath yogis. The Chalisa says that Gorakhnath carried them across.

When is the Gorakhnath Chalisa recited?

It can be read on any day. The text itself speaks of taking his name in the early morning (chaupai 19) and of reading it twelve times a day (chaupai 40). At the Gorakhnath Temple in Gorakhpur there is a custom of offering khichdi to Baba Gorakhnath on Makar Sankranti.

Why is the text on the Gorakhnath Temple website a little different?

The temple website gives this same chalisa as ‘Shri Goraksh Chalisa’. The chaupais are the same, but several words differ, for example ‘dukh nashave’ for ‘dukh mit jave’ and ‘Ved bakhani’ for ‘Ved na jani’. The printed book’s text is followed here, and the main differences from the temple text are listed in the note above.
