Meaning, sources and more prayers: sanatanbodh.in/en/prayers/shiv-108-naam/

In short

These are the 108 names of Shiva, each said as “Om … Namah”. This common Shiva Ashtottara Shatanamavali comes from the Shivashtottara Shatanama Stotram (“Shivo Maheshvarah Shambhuh…”), which its colophon places in the Shiva Rahasya. By custom, a bilva leaf, flower or akshat is offered at each name in archana, and it is recited especially on Mondays, in Sawan and on Mahashivratri.

This list is called the Shivashtottara Shatanamavali (Shiva Ashtottara Shatanamavali). Its verse form is the Shivashtottara Shatanama Stotram, whose 13 verses give the same 108 names in the same order. On sanskritdocuments.org, the colophon of the stotram says it is part of the Shiva Rahasya and was spoken by Vishnu, and the colophon of the namavali there calls it a dialogue between Gauri and Narayana; the English page of Drik Panchang ends by naming the Shakta Pramod. Other lists are printed under the same title: the Shivashtottara Shatanama Stotram in Gita Press’s “Shiva Stotra Ratnakar” is in “Jaya …” forms of address, and the 108-name hymn of Andhaka in the Shiva Purana (Rudra Samhita, Yuddha Khanda) begins “Mahadevo Virupakshah Chandrarddhakritashekharah”. Differences between sources: name 11 is “Shulapanine” in some sources; name 20 is “Trilokishaya” in the sanskritdocuments namavali; name 65 is “Giridhanvine” on Drik Panchang; name 90 is “Pashavimochanaya” in the sanskritdocuments namavali and in Swami Swayamprakashagiri’s commentary. The meaning stays the same in each case. Names 60 Girishaya (long i) and 61 Girishaya (short i) are different names, not a repeat; so are 96 Haraye and 100 Haraya.

Frequently asked questions

Where does this list of 108 names of Shiva come from?

It is the namavali form of the 108 names in the Shivashtottara Shatanama Stotram. The colophon of the stotram on sanskritdocuments.org places it in the Shiva Rahasya, where Vishnu speaks these names. The English page of Drik Panchang attributes it to the Shakta Pramod.

How is an archana done with this namavali?

By custom, a bilva leaf, flower or akshat is offered on the Shiva linga or a picture of Shiva as each name is said with “Om … Namah”. The phalashruti of the stotram also mentions worship with bilva leaves, flowers, sesame and akshat, among other things. For the procedure, ask your own purohit or follow your family’s tradition.

What is the difference between the namavali and the stotram?

In the stotram the same 108 names are set in 13 verses, such as “Shivo Maheshvarah Shambhuh Pinaki Shashishekharah”. In the namavali each name is said separately in the dative case, as in “Om Shivaya Namah”, so that an offering can be made at each name.

Why do some names differ between books and websites?

Copies have picked up small differences of grammar and spelling, such as “Shulapanaye” and “Shulapanine”, or “Pashavimochakaya” and “Pashavimochanaya”; the meaning is the same. Besides this, some entirely different lists of 108 names of Shiva are printed under the same title.

When is it recited?

By custom it is recited in daily Shiva worship, and especially on Mondays, in the month of Sawan and on Mahashivratri.
