Meaning, sources and more prayers: sanatanbodh.in/en/prayers/tulsi-chalisa/

In short

The Tulsi Chalisa is a hymn to Mother Tulsi that begins “Shri Tulsi Maharani, karun vinay sirnay”. It calls Tulsi the beloved of Vishnu, speaks of her glory in the month of Kartik, and ends with a simple method of Tulsi worship. By tradition it is recited in Kartik, on Dev Uthani Ekadashi and Tulsi Vivah, and in daily Tulsi worship.

This is the text of the printed ‘51 Chalisa Sangrah’ of Randhir Prakashan, Haridwar, compared with Hindi Path, Aaj Tak and Sri Mandir. It has 38 chaupais. The Aaj Tak page adds two more chaupais at the end (‘Tulsi maiya tum kalyani…’ and ‘Bhav na tujhe maan nit nit dhyave…’); they are not in the printed book, so they are not given here. Small variants: in chaupai 9 Aaj Tak reads ‘pujan’; in chaupai 24 Hindi Path reads ‘Tulsi mata’ (which breaks the rhyme), the others ‘Tulsi mai’; in chaupai 29 the book reads ‘mang mat’. In chaupai 13 every source prints ‘chhayo tab pratap’; the meaning takes it as ‘tav’ (your). The second line of chaupai 37 is the same in every source but seems incomplete in metre and rhyme. Another Tulsi Chalisa, beginning ‘Dhanya dhanya Shri Tulsi Mata’, is also found (on Drik Panchang); it is a different composition.

Frequently asked questions

How many chaupais are there in the Tulsi Chalisa?

The printed text has one doha at the beginning, 38 chaupais and a closing doha. Some websites add two more chaupais at the end, which are not in the printed book.

When is the Tulsi Chalisa recited?

It can be read every day during Tulsi worship. By tradition it is recited especially in the month of Kartik, on Dev Uthani Ekadashi and on Tulsi Vivah. The Chalisa itself speaks of the glory of the month of Kartik (chaupais 7 and 37).

What method of Tulsi worship does the Chalisa describe?

In chaupais 32 to 35: bathing the Tulsi with Ganga water; offering sandal paste, unbroken rice, flowers, incense, a lamp and food; sipping Ganga water (achaman); meditation; and then reciting the Chalisa. The method may differ with the custom of your family and region.

Why is Tulsi called the beloved of Vishnu?

By tradition Tulsi is regarded as dear to Vishnu, and a Tulsi leaf is offered in his worship. Chaupais 2 to 5 of the Chalisa express this. On Tulsi Vivah, Tulsi is married to Shaligram (Vishnu).

Who wrote the Tulsi Chalisa?

The text does not name a poet, and its author is not known from any reliable source.
