Dhanvantari: risen from the churning of the ocean

According to the Bhagavata Purana, at the end of the Samudra Manthan (the churning of the ocean), Dhanvantari appeared holding a pot of amrita. He is called a partial avatar of Lord Vishnu and the founder of Ayurveda. By tradition, Kartik Krishna Trayodashi is his jayanti, so on this day he is worshipped with a prayer for good health.

Bhagavata Purana 8.8.34

Dhanvantari is described as a portion of a portion of Lord Vishnu and a knower of Ayurveda.

The story

The story of King Hima’s son

According to the popular story, King Hima’s son’s horoscope foretold his death by snakebite on the fourth day of his marriage. That night, his wife piled jewellery and coins at the door of the room, lit lamps all around, and kept telling stories and singing songs all night. Yama, who came in the form of a snake, was so dazzled by the lamps that he stayed sitting on the pile, and went back in the morning. The custom of offering a lamp to Yama on the night of Dhanteras is linked to this story.
