Meaning, sources and more prayers: sanatanbodh.in/en/prayers/bajrang-baan/

In short

The Bajrang Baan is an urgent prayer to Hanuman that opens with the doha “Nishchay prem pratiti te”. It recalls Hanuman’s deeds at Lanka, contains mantra lines built on seed syllables, and asks him to remove the devotee’s troubles. Tradition attributes it to Goswami Tulsidas. By tradition it is recited especially on Tuesdays, Saturdays and Hanuman Jayanti.

Printed and online texts of the Bajrang Baan differ a good deal: the order of lines, some chaupais and the closing doha all vary. The text here is the one on which Randhir Prakashan, Haridwar’s printed ‘51 Chalisa Sangrah’, Drik Panchang and Bhakti Bharat agree; where the sources are evenly split, the printed book’s reading is taken. The main variants: in chaupai 1 the printed book reads ‘jay Hanuman sant hitkari’; in chaupai 8 you will find ‘surpur mahan bhai’ (Drik Panchang) or ‘surpur nabh bhai’ (Bhakti Bharat, sanskritdocuments.org) for ‘surpur mein bhai’; in chaupai 10 ‘Lakhan’ for ‘Lakshman’ and ‘atur hvai’ for ‘atur hoy’; in chaupai 11 sanskritdocuments.org has ‘jai Hanuman jayati bal-sagar’; in chaupai 12 the printed book reads ‘shri hanu hanu hanu’ and ‘bajra ko kile’; in chaupai 16 Bhakti Bharat has ‘maru jaay ke’; in chaupai 18 Drik Panchang has ‘nahin janat kachhu’; in chaupai 21 Drik Panchang has ‘dheer Hanumanta’; in chaupai 27 sanskritdocuments.org has ‘charan pakari’; in chaupai 35 you will also find ‘jo japai’ for ‘aru japai’. Chaupai 20 is missing from the sanskritdocuments.org text. Some editions close with this doha: ‘Ur pratiti dridh, saran hvai, path karai dhari dhyan. Badha sab har, karain sab kaam saphal Hanuman’. An older Webdunia text, quoted for reference by sanskritdocuments.org, adds about 27 more chaupais; they were not found in any printed source, so they are not given here.

Frequently asked questions

Who wrote the Bajrang Baan?

Tradition attributes it to Goswami Tulsidas, and the sanskritdocuments.org text says so at its close. Drik Panchang and Bhakti Bharat do not name an author, so the attribution is given here as tradition only.

How is the Bajrang Baan different from the Hanuman Chalisa?

The Hanuman Chalisa praises Hanuman’s virtues and deeds in forty chaupais. The Bajrang Baan is an urgent cry for help: it contains mantra lines built on seed syllables, and it invokes oaths by Ram and Sita to ask Hanuman for immediate help.

When is the Bajrang Baan recited?

It can be read on any day. By tradition it is recited especially on Tuesdays, Saturdays and Hanuman Jayanti.

What do words like “hreem”, “hum” and “cham” mean?

They are seed syllables (bija) from the mantra tradition. They have no direct word meaning; by tradition their power is held to lie in their sound. “Hanu” means “strike” or “destroy”.

Why does the Bajrang Baan differ from book to book?

It is a very widely sung text and has been printed in many editions. The order of lines, some chaupais and the closing doha vary between sources. The text here is the one shared by a printed collection and two websites; the main differences are listed in the note below the text.
