Meaning, sources and more prayers: sanatanbodh.in/en/prayers/hanuman-108-naam/

In short

This is the Shri Hanuman (Anjaneya) Ashtottara Shatanamavali: 108 names of Hanuman, each said as “Om … namah”. It is the list that begins “Om Anjaneyaya namah”; its verse form is the Ashtottara Shatanama Stotram beginning “Anjaneyo mahaviro hanuman marutatmajah”. By custom, a flower, akshat, sindoor or a tulsi leaf is offered at each name during archana. It is commonly recited on Tuesdays, Saturdays and on Hanuman Jayanti.

This is the namavali that begins “Om Anjaneyaya namah, Om Mahaviraya namah, Om Hanumate namah”; it is also called the Shrimad Anjaneya Ashtottara Shatanamavali. Other 108-name lists of Hanuman are printed too, for example one beginning “Hanumate, Anjanaputraya, Vayusunave, Mahabalaya…” and another beginning “Anjanigarbhasambhutaya, Vayuputraya, Chiranjivine…”; those are different lists. The sources of this list read some names differently. This page gives, for each name, the reading found in most of the sources checked. The sanskritdocuments.org namavali and the stotram text on stotram.lalitaalaalitah.com differ at these places: name 11 “Paravidyaparihartre”, 23 “Sarvayantratmikaya”, 44 “Kesarisunave”, 45 “Sitashokanivaranaya”, 74 “Vardhimainakapujitaya” (short a), 78 “Mahiravanamardanaya”, 89 “Dhritavrataya”, 91 “Harirmarkatamarkataya”, 95 “Shatakanthamadapahaya” (the sanskritdocuments.org namavali: “Dashakanthamadapahaya”), 102 “…brahmastravinivartakaya” and 104 “Sharapanjarahelakaya”. That namavali also has 15 “Sarvagrahavinashakaya” and 103 “Parthadhvajagrasamvasaya”. The stotram text on sanskritdocuments.org has “Sanchaladvala…” at 34 and ends with “Sitasameta Shri Ramabhadra Puja Dhurandharah”. Drik Panchang has “Ramachudamanipradayakaya” at 71. No name is repeated. The 21 verses of the stotram give the same 108 names in the same order, so the count is not in doubt; some websites split long names and count 111. On sanskritdocuments.org the stotram’s heading says “kalikarahasyatah” (from the Kalika Rahasya); the closing lines (colophons) of the sources checked name no text, and we have not seen that text ourselves.

Frequently asked questions

How is an archana done with this namavali?

By custom, at each name one says “Om … namah” and offers Hanuman a flower, a few grains of akshat, sindoor or a tulsi leaf, so that there are 108 offerings. The details follow the custom of one’s home or temple.

What is the difference between the namavali and the stotram?

The stotram is in verse, and the names stand in the nominative, as in “Anjaneyo mahaviro”. In the namavali the same names are said one by one in the dative with “Om … namah”, as in “Om Anjaneyaya namah”, so that an offering can be made at each name.

Why do some names differ from book to book?

The list circulates in many printed editions and websites, and some words differ between them, for example name 78 “Maharavanamardanaya” or “Mahiravanamardanaya”. This page gives the reading found in most sources; the main differences are listed in the note above.

When is the Hanuman Ashtottara Shatanamavali recited?

By custom it is recited especially on Tuesdays and Saturdays, and on Hanuman Jayanti. It can be read in the worship of Hanuman on any day.
