For fear of Bali, Sugriva, king of the vanaras, lived on the mountain, watching the Lord Ram as he passed along the path. A great sage had cursed Bali (so he could not come there); now, startled, Sugriva wondered what should be done. Then, taking the form of a Brahmin, you brought the great Lord to him and ended the grief of the Lord’s servant, Sugriva. (This meeting of Ram and Hanuman is told in the Kishkindha Kand of the Ramcharitmanas.) O mighty monkey, who in the world does not know your name, Sankat Mochan?

Ravana tormented Sita and told all the demonesses to talk her out of her grief. At that time, O great lord Hanuman, you went and slew mighty demons. Sita was begging the Ashoka tree for fire; you gave her the Lord’s ring and ended her sorrow. (This episode is in the Sundar Kand of the Ramcharitmanas.) O mighty monkey, who in the world does not know your name, Sankat Mochan?

Then, O hero, you brought the physician Sushen along with his house, and uprooted the Drona mountain. You brought the Sanjivani herb, placed it in (Sushen’s) hands and saved Lakshman’s life. O mighty monkey, who in the world does not know your name, Sankat Mochan?

Ravana fought a treacherous battle and cast the serpent noose (nagpash) over everyone. The whole army, Shri Raghunath included, fell senseless; it was a grave peril. Then, O Hanuman, you brought Garuda, king of birds, who cut the bonds and ended the terror. O mighty monkey, who in the world does not know your name, Sankat Mochan?

When Ahiravan carried Shri Raghunath and his brother (Lakshman) off to the netherworld, and all of them agreed to worship the Goddess with full rites and offer the two as a sacrifice, you went there to help and destroyed Ahiravan with his army. (The story of Ahiravan is not in the Valmiki Ramayana or the Ramcharitmanas; it is well known in folk tradition.) O mighty monkey, who in the world does not know your name, Sankat Mochan?

Your red body glows with crimson, and your tail too is red. Body strong as the thunderbolt, destroyer of demons, heroic monkey: victory, victory, victory to you.
This text follows the Gita Press, Gorakhpur booklet ‘Shri Hanuman Chalisa’, where it is printed alongside the Hanuman Chalisa; the sanskritdocuments.org text matches it word for word. The spelling is Gita Press’s older Braj-Awadhi style (rabi, binati, bir, baidya). After the first verse Gita Press shortens the refrain ‘Ko nahin janat hai jag mein kapi Sankat Mochan naam tiharo’ to ‘Ko…’; here it is written out in every verse. Variants: the Randhir Prakashan printed collection reads ‘Siy ko tab rakshas son kahi’ in verse 4, ‘bandhan kaati ke traas nivaro’ in verse 6 and ‘tumse’ in verse 8. Drik Panchang has ‘kaaj kiyo’ and ‘jo kuchh sankat’ in verse 8, and ‘jay jay kapi soor’ in the doha; Gita Press and the other sources read ‘jay jay jay kapi soor’, which completes the doha’s eleven-matra half-line. The sanskritdocuments.org text adds, after the doha, the acclamation lines beginning ‘Siyavar Ramchandra pad gahi rahun’, which are not in Gita Press.
