In short

The Parshuram Chalisa is a hymn to Parashurama, held to be the sixth avatar of Vishnu, that begins ‘Jai Prabhu Parshuram sukh sagar’. It has two opening dohas, forty chaupais, a closing doha and a Sanskrit shloka. It tells of his birth on the bright third day of Vaishakh, the slaying of the thousand-armed king, his meeting with Shri Rama, and disciples such as Bhishma, Drona and Karna.

This is the text of Randhir Prakashan, Haridwar, ‘51 Chalisa Sangrah’ (2004, pp. 146 to 150), read from the page images and compared word by word with several websites. All sources have the same chaupais in the same order. The main variant readings: in chaupai 38 the book and most websites read ‘lalahin’ (long for), while one line of copies reads ‘lahahin’ (gain); the same copies read ‘rahihahun’ in chaupai 20 and ‘shishya’ in chaupai 32. Some copies print ‘Ganapatiji’ in chaupai 17, ‘shaastra vidya’ (scriptural learning) for ‘shastra vidya’ (the science of arms) in chaupai 33 and ‘desi Kashyap’ in chaupai 35, which look like slips; some websites leave out the closing doha and the shloka. The shloka is given in the book’s spelling (‘sahasabahurmardanam’, ‘nayana nandam’, ‘parashumvande’); some copies read ‘sahasrabahurmardanam’ and ‘nayananandam’. The last chaupai carries the name ‘Purnendu’, which appears to be the poet’s signature; nothing else is known about the poet.

Frequently asked questions

When is the Parshuram Chalisa recited?

It can be read on any day. The Chalisa gives Parashurama’s birth as the bright third day (Shukla Tritiya) of Vaishakh (chaupai 4), and by tradition Parashurama Jayanti is kept on that tithi. According to chaupai 5 he was born in the first watch of the night, when the Tritiya prevailed at pradosh (dusk).

Who wrote the Parshuram Chalisa?

The last chaupai carries the name ‘Purnendu’, which appears to be the poet’s signature. The Parashurama aarti printed in the same Randhir Prakashan book also closes with the name ‘Purnendu’. Nothing more is known about the poet.

Which episodes of Parashurama does the Chalisa tell?

His birth to Jamadagni and Renuka; the breaking of Ganesha’s tusk, from which he is called Ekadanta (a story told in tradition); the thousand-armed Kartavirya Arjuna killing Jamadagni for the sake of the cow, and Parashurama’s revenge; ridding the earth of Kshatriyas twenty-one times; his meeting with Shri Rama after Shiva’s bow was broken; teaching arms to Bhishma, Drona and Karna; and giving the earth to Kashyapa and doing penance on Mount Mahendra.

Is Parashurama the teacher of Bhishma, Drona and Karna in the Mahabharata too?

Yes. In the Mahabharata Parashurama teaches the science of arms to Bhishma, Drona and Karna. In the Valmiki Ramayana, at the end of the Bala Kanda, Parashurama meets Shri Rama as he returns to Ayodhya after the wedding with Sita.
