Meaning, sources and more prayers: sanatanbodh.in/en/prayers/vishnu-108-naam/

In short

The Shri Vishnu Ashtottara Shatanamavali is a list of 108 names of Lord Vishnu, each said as “Om … namah”. The names come, in order, from the Vishnu Ashtottarashatanama Stotram beginning “Vishnur jishnur vashatkaro devadevo vrishakapih”. By custom, a tulsi leaf, a flower or akshat is offered at each name in Vishnu worship. It is commonly recited on Ekadashi, on Thursdays and at the Satyanarayan puja.

This is the namavali that begins “Om Vishnave namah, Om Jishnave namah, Om Vashatkaraya namah”; its 108 names appear in the same order in the stotram that begins “Vishnur jishnur vashatkaro devadevo vrishakapih”. A different list is also widely printed under the same title, beginning “Om Vishnave namah, Om Lakshmipataye namah, Om Krishnaya namah, Om Vaikunthaya namah, Om Garudadhvajaya namah”; Drik Panchang gives that list. Variants of this list: name 9 reads “Aditestutaya” (praised by Aditi) in several sources, while the printed stotram has “Aditeh sutah” (son of Aditi). Name 75 “Mohadaya” is “Mukundaya” in several namavalis, but the stotram has “Mohado”. Name 17 is “Kalimalapaharine” in some sources. One source reads name 37 as “Virataya” and 98 as “Saukhyapradaya”, counts 54-55 as one name “Sarvasharanyaya” and 81 as two names (“Somaya”, “Suryagninayanaya”). Some editions leave out names 31 to 43 (from Vamanaya to the second Dharanidharaya), count name 28 as two names (“Aprameyaya”, “Atmane”), and reach 108 by adding at the end words from the closing verses of the stotram (Atulatejase, Divyaya, Sarvapapaharaya and others). Dharanidharaya (30 and 43), Sanatanaya (34 and 96) and Madhusudanaya (80 and 108) each come twice in the stotram itself, so they are repeated here too.

Frequently asked questions

How many names are in the Vishnu Ashtottara Shatanamavali, and where does it come from?

It has 108 names of Lord Vishnu. They come, in the same order, from the Vishnu Ashtottarashatanama Stotram that begins “Vishnur jishnur vashatkaro…”, which is printed in the stotra collection Shakta Pramoda. The sources checked do not name a Purana or Tantra as its origin.

How is an archana done with the namavali?

By custom, each name is said as “Om … namah” before an image of Lord Vishnu or a Shaligram, and a tulsi leaf, a flower or a few grains of akshat are offered at each name. This makes 108 offerings in all.

What is the difference between the namavali and the stotram?

In the stotram the same names are woven into verses, which are recited. In the namavali each name is said separately with “Om … namah”, so that an offering can be made at each name.

Why do different books give different 108 names of Vishnu?

Several different lists are printed under the same title, such as the list beginning “Om Vishnave namah, Om Lakshmipataye namah” that Drik Panchang gives. This list too has variant words, which are listed in the note on this page.

When is this namavali recited?

By custom it is recited in daily Vishnu worship, and especially on Ekadashi, on Thursdays and at the Satyanarayan puja.
