In short

Ugadi 2027 is on Wednesday, 7 April. Chaitra Shukla Pratipada holds at sunrise that day: Pratipada begins at 5:22 AM on 7 April and lasts until 4:30 AM on 8 April (Drik Panchang: 5:20 and 4:28), so in Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Karnataka the new year begins on 7 April. It is Shaka 1949, and in the cycle of sixty samvatsaras the year is called Plavanga (ప్లవంగ), the 41st, after Parabhava. Drik Panchang’s Telugu calendar for Hyderabad also gives Ugadi on 7 April 2027. The same day is Gudi Padwa in Maharashtra and the first day of Chaitra Navratri in North India.

How the date of Ugadi 2027 is set

The Telugu and Kannada calendars are amanta lunisolar calendars: a month begins the day after the new moon, and the year with Chaitra Shukla Pratipada. The new year is the day with Pratipada at sunrise. In 2027 the Chaitra Amavasya ends at 5:22 AM on 7 April (Drik: 5:20), before sunrise even in Hyderabad (sunrise 6:06), Bengaluru (6:12) and Visakhapatnam (5:47), and Pratipada lasts until 4:30 AM the next morning. So Ugadi is on 7 April all over the South; on 8 April Dwitiya holds at sunrise. A tithi changes at the same moment all over India; only sunrise differs from city to city.

The Plavanga samvatsara and Shaka 1949

The panchangs of the South and of Maharashtra give every year one of sixty names (Prabhava to Akshaya). In Drik Panchang’s list of Telugu samvatsara names Parabhava is the 40th and Plavanga the 41st; Drik’s Telugu calendar reads Shaka 1948 Parabhava until 1 April 2027 and Shaka 1949 Plavanga from 1 May 2027. Our calculation gives the same: Shaka 1949 is the year that begins in 2027 (1949 + 78 = 2027). The next samvatsara is Kilaka (Shaka 1950), whose Ugadi is on 27 March 2028. In Telugu script the name is ప్లవంగ. This page gives no year forecast with the samvatsara’s name.

Ugadi pachadi: six tastes

The first thing eaten on Ugadi is the pachadi, which mixes six tastes. According to The News Minute it is made of raw mango, tamarind, neem flowers, jaggery, salt, green chillies and water, and is eaten first thing in the morning of the festival, on an empty stomach. Each taste is given a meaning by tradition, but the meanings differ between sources; both are given below.

Sweet: jaggery

Happiness and joy. Both sources agree.

Bitter: neem flowers

Sorrow and difficulty. The neem is in flower at Ugadi, so its flowers are used rather than its leaves.

Karnataka: Yugadi and bevu-bella

In Karnataka the day is called Yugadi. According to Wikipedia, bevu-bella (in Kannada bevu = neem, bella = jaggery) is shared there in place of Ugadi pachadi: a mixture of neem and jaggery, taken as a sign of accepting life’s bitter and sweet experiences together. Karnataka’s festive sweet is holige or obbattu, and in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana bobbatlu (bhakshalu, polelu): a flatbread filled with chana dal and jaggery (Wikipedia). This is the lunar (Chandramana) Yugadi; not every community in the state keeps the same new year, so follow your family’s custom.

Panchanga Shravanam: hearing the new year’s almanac

On the evening of Ugadi the new year’s panchang is read aloud in temples, gatherings and homes; this is the Panchanga Shravanam (Panchanga Pathanam). According to Wikipedia a priest or an elder reads out the year’s tithi, vara, nakshatra, yoga and karana, the eclipses, and what it says on rain and farming. It is a custom; the forecasts printed in panchangs are not fixed by scripture, and this page does not repeat them. The new year’s tithis and festivals are in our Telugu calendar, month by month.

Customs at home

Mango-leaf torana

Doors are hung with toranas of mango leaves; mango leaves and coconuts are held to be auspicious.

Wikipedia “Ugadi”

Oil bath

The day begins with a bath after rubbing the body with scented oil, followed by prayers.

The new year’s first meal

After the pachadi or bevu-bella comes the festive meal, with bobbatlu or obbattu as its centre.

The day of Brahma’s creation
