What goes into a gudi

According to Maharashtra’s Department of Tourism, a gudi is a bamboo stick decorated with a silk cloth, flowers, neem leaves, sugar garlands and a silver or copper pot, raised at homes as a mark of victory and good fortune. According to Wikipedia the bright silk cloth is tied at the top of the bamboo with boughs of neem and mango leaves and a garland of flowers, and the top is capped with an upturned silver, bronze or copper pot (handi or kalash). The sugar garland is called gathi. The gudi is usually raised high, at the door, a window or on the roof, where it can be seen from afar. Its make and the colour of the cloth differ from home to home.

The festive food is puran poli (a flatbread filled with chana dal and jaggery), shrikhand with puri, and basundi. For farmers it is the time after the rabi harvest, when the new crop comes in.
