rasavarjaṃ raso'pyasya paraṃ dṛṣṭvā nivartate

Word by word
Translation
Sense objects fall away from one who abstains from them, but the taste for them remains; even the taste falls away when the Supreme is seen.
Explanation
A deep psychological truth: giving things up outwardly (as in fasting) does not remove the craving for them. The craving goes only when a greater joy is found. That is why the Gita speaks not of mere suppression, but of mastering the senses through a higher experience.
