yāvānartha udapāne sarvataḥ samplutodake
tāvānsarveṣu vedeṣu brāhmaṇasya vijānataḥ
yāvānartha udapāne sarvataḥ samplutodake
tāvānsarveṣu vedeṣu brāhmaṇasya vijānataḥ
Word by word
Translation
As much use as there is in a small well when there is water flooding everywhere, so much is there in all the Vedas for a knower of Brahman.
Explanation
For one who has a vast lake, a small well naturally loses its importance, even though the well is not bad. In the same way, for one who has known the supreme truth, rituals that yield rewards become secondary. This is not an insult to the Vedas but a pointer towards their ultimate goal.
