Word by word
Translation
What is night for all beings, in that the self-controlled one is awake; and that in which all beings are awake is night for the sage who sees.
Explanation
A beautiful metaphor. The reality of the Self, to which ordinary people are "asleep", is where the wise one is awake; and the world of enjoyment, in which ordinary people are fully "awake" and busy, holds no interest for the wise. Their outlooks and priorities are the reverse of each other.
