सञ्जय उवाच
तं तथा कृपयाविष्टमश्रुपूर्णाकुलेक्षणम् ।
विषीदन्तमिदं वाक्यमुवाच मधुसूदनः ॥ १ ॥

Translation
Sanjaya said: To Arjuna, thus overcome with pity, his troubled eyes filled with tears and sinking in grief, Madhusudana spoke these words.
संजय बोले: इस प्रकार करुणा से भरे, आँसुओं से भरी व्याकुल आँखों वाले और शोक करते हुए अर्जुन से मधुसूदन (श्रीकृष्ण) ने यह वचन कहा।
Explanation
At the end of the first chapter, Arjuna had resolved not to fight and sat down in his chariot. The second chapter begins right there: Sanjaya tells Dhritarashtra that, seeing Arjuna in this state, Shri Krishna began to speak. The name "Madhusudana" is linked to the slaying of the demon (asura) named Madhu.
